His obituary appeared in the WEST TENNESSEE WHIG, April 25, 1862:
This gallant officer fell at the battle of Shiloh, near Tennessee river, on the 6th of April, while leading his men on to battle and victory. He had command of company 1, 27th regiment of Tenn. volunteers and was a citizen of Henderson co., Tenn. He fell early in the action, receiving a deadly wound from a grapeshot, from the enemy's battery. He fell almost without a struggle and his company and the Regiment have sustained an irreparable loss by his untimely death. The writer of this /obituary/ was well acquainted with Capt. Sayle — had known him at home as well as in the army. He was a brave man who loved him country and gave himself up as a living sacrifice on her altar. I had conversed with Capt. Sayle on the morning previous to the opening of the battle — he was cheerful and hopeful and said he knew we would gain the day. After we were formed into line of battle and advancing on the enemy (his command being next to mine in the regiment) we were halted down in a hollow amid thick undergrowth and ravine; he said to me, "I don't like this, I don't like our position, I desire to get into a clear open place where I can do execution and see it done." After we(Page 48)
left this position he remarked to me, "When you hear the commands please report them in a clear and dIstinct voice so that I may not misunderstand and give them to my men. "These were his last words; when the enemy opened his battery, he fell the first fire. I have often talked with Capt. Sayle about our homes; he loved his home dearly, he doted on his wife /Nora Williams Sayle, whom he had married only recently/, she was always uppermost in his mind and had strong hopes of returning to her greetings but alas! the brittle thread was cut and there is no more left of the hero, the soldier, the martyr, the christian, Capt. Samuel A. Sayle. He was an ornament to the society in which he lived, his friends loved and he loved them in return. He was an exemplary citizen, a faithful and true followed of Christ and I confidently believe he has found a final resting place in eternal mansions beyond the grave, where the cares and troubles of the Soldier are unknown. Peace be to his ashes.

His obituary appeared in the WEST TENNESSEE WHIG, November 22, 1861:
They fought like brave men, long and well. They piled that ground with Yankees, slain. They conquered — but Columbus fell, bleeding in his country's name.
Christopher Columbus Cawthon, the son of John L. and Martha Cawthon, Mifflin, Tenn., was born Sept. 8th, 1842 and died Nov. 7th, 1861, aged 19 years, two months and 29 days. Our much esteemed young friend fell with the full armor on in the battle opposite Columbus, Kentucky, fighting nobly and valiantly in defense of his country. He has left a numerous and extensive circle of friends and acquaintances who deeply sympathize and mourn with his bereaved parents for his untimely death. It is indeed a heavy stroke for he was a universal favorite with us all and those only who knew him best could appreciate his superior worth. Our young friend was one of the first to volunteer in the Forked Deer Company, the first company that Henderson county sent out to meet the foe. He held the office of 2d Sergeant which office he discharged with honor to himself and to the entire satisfaction of the company. He fell early in the action and breathed his last in the arms of his brave comrades that picked him up when first they saw him fall. He received a death wound from an ill-fated musket ball which entered his neck just below the chin and supposed to lodge in the shoulder. He died almost without a struggle and without uttering a word. He died covered all over with glory but he has left a void among his parents and friends at home that can never be filled. He had many amiable traits of character -courteous and polite to every one with cheerful spirits and a smile on his countenance, he never failed to awaken interest even among strangers. He was remarkably kind and polite to the ladies and an especial favorite with all the "girls, "for they all knew "Kit" and indeed in him they had a true friend. He was a dutiful son and very affectionate to his brothers and sisters. While he was in camp it was his constant care to keep his parents from being uneasy about him. He wrote very often and his letters were encouraging and cheerful and would always say, "Ma, don't be uneasy, I will take care of myself." But alas! he has been cut down from among us, and the high hopes and bright anticipations of his fond parents have been blighted. He was indeed a young man of bright promise; was the pride and boast of the vicinity in which he lived and would have been the future stay and solace of his parents declining years. It is a sad bereavement to them but they must bear with it as he has but just paid the debt that we must all pay, sooner or later. Peace be to his shades.
