OAK HILL CEMETERY

Located in Huntingdon, Tennessee, off East Main Street (U.S. Highway 70). The black section of this very old town cemetery is located in the west side of the cemetery; several years ago the hedgerow dividing the black and white sections from one another was removed. The former lane leading into the black section, linking it with East Main Street, has been eliminated. Although no black burials have been made as yet in the former all-white section, blacks have every right to be buried there and are likely to be so in the years to come.

OAKFORD ALLEN was living near Clarksburg, Tennessee in 1870, working on the Rothrock farm; in 1880 he was in the employ of William Johnson. A single man, he was subsequently employed by the prosperous Huntingdon merchant, Joe McCracken on whose homeplace he was living in 1900. In a last will executed March 10, 1904, Allen appointed his employer as his executor, to maintain a support from his estate for his sister, Elvina Dixon of Perry County, Tennessee; he also left $50 each to his nieces Nancy, Martha, Ruby, Katy, Frankie and Omar Hunter; the remainder of his estate was left to Joe McCracken, Jr. The will was probated March 16, 1904. (Carroll County Will Book B, pages 573-574)

In an unmarked grave in Oak Hill Cemetery is buried JIM NORMAN who died July 28, 1940, paternal great-grandfather of Mr. Clarence Norman (born 1934), Huntingdon city councilman. The 1900 U.S. census gives Jim Norman's birthdate as January 1854; his Cox Funeral Home record gives his parents as Greg Bigham and Everline Scobie.
