(All veterans were living in the Basin except those designated.)
The Korean War has been the subject of several media articles lately since this year marks the 50th anniversary of that conflict. We won't deal with the subject in depth, since that information can easily be accessed via the Internet or encyclopedias, but we did think a list of Polk County men who served in that war might be in order.
Imagine our shock and dismay when no list of Korean War veterans was to be found anywhere. After one whole day of making phone calls, first to local officials, then state, then even national offices - no list was found. We talked with Veteran Affairs, Selective Service, Dept. of War Records, the Korean War Veterans Organizations, and always the same answer - "no separate Korean War list is available by county." Sadly, it seems to be true what they say about this being the "Forgotten War."
Not to be outdone, we decided to start our own list, beginning with the editor's husband, James Presswood. He named as many men as he remembered, and we began calling them to see who else they could recall and continued doing this until the following list was compiled. There was no way to determine just which veterans actually were engaged in the action in Korea, so we have included all those who were known to be in the military service during those years from 1950-53 when that conflict was being waged. We may have even included a few whose service was slightly outside those parameters.
Please know that we are well aware that this is not the complete list of Polk County veterans of the Korean War, for which we sincerely apologize. However, it is a small way to honor those we have been able to identify, and we send our thanks to all those who served that do not appear here. If you know of others whose names should be added, please let us know. Many thanks to everyone who helped compile the list and a special thanks to L'Ene Cross for her expertise with our microfilmed discharge records.
