Perry County, Tennessee

Roberts Barnett Cemetery analysis

Analysis Contributed by:  Wilda Patterson and Joyce Warner Douglass

13 March 2009

Roberts Barnett Cemetery is a small cemetery that overlooks the embayment of Kentucky Lake into the lower reaches of Toms Creek.   The cemetery is located on a hill on the right side of Tom’s Creek Road, about 3 miles from Pineview, overlooking the backwater of  Tennessee River. The cemetery has a wrought iron sign and fence around the front, erected after 2004, and is well kept. There are some unmarked graves.  The cemetery is very well maintained. Many of the markers have been replaced. There are a dozen or so unmarked or unidentified graves.

Note: At the lower end of the cemetery is a row of four homemade cement markers. In each a temporary marker plate was placed behind glass and embedded in the cement slab. These markers are unreadable in 1999 and were not read by the Bowens circa 1992.

This cemetery is located in the Tom's Creek section of the Tennessee River watershed.

There are a couple known transcriptions of this cemetery:

  • David Donahue recorded this cemetery on 26 November 1999;

  • David Donahue checked and updated it in 29 August 2004;

  • (both of these transcriptions were recorded on the TnGenWeb site.)

  • Mary (Stewart) Bowen and Melissa (Snyder) Bowen recorded the cemetery in the early 1990s. Their record appears in Mary Bowen's Perry County, Tennessee Cemetery Records (Vol. I). This earlier record is referred to as Bowen in the notes below.

  • Wilda Patterson photographed and catalogued this cemetery in December 2008;

In the list below, I’ve started with what is recorded on the new searchable TnGenWeb site, compared it to the other transcriptions and made a note of any difference.

As reported in River Counties Quarterly, 1973, reported to be buried here are B.B. Crowell who died Dec 8, 193_ with an undertaker marker in 1973.     Per Wilda Patterson, Feb 2009:  In Oct 2005, the glass was broken on one of the concrete markers at the rear of the cemetery, and the name of Brooksie Crowell was "etched" into the metal plate.  It was not recorded in the earlier transcriptions in 1992 and 1999.  I contacted the Luff-Bowen Funeral Home in Waverly and was told they had the burial record of B.B. Crowell.  The record stated:  "Brooksie Bandy Crowell, age 38 yrs, 11 mos, & 3 days.  Born Jan 5, 1900 and died Dec 8, 1938 at Pope, Tenn.  His father's name was not legible, but could be (Marvin?) Crowell and his mother was Emma McCaig.

From Wilda:  at the back end of the cemetery is a row of 4 homemade concrete markers.  These markers had glass over a temporary plate and were unreadable by Bowen in 1992 and by Donahue in 1999.  According to Alice Barker, granddaughter of Delia O'Guin Coleman, these graves are Delia and her three infant children, Susan, Alice, James.
