William R. Stone was a Confederate soldier from Clay (then Overton) Co. He applied for pension #S2111 in Clay Co., TN on 17 August 1899. At the time of the application, he stated he was a resident of Oakley, Clay Co., TN.; that he was born in Overton Co., TN. in the year 1826. (His tombstone says he was born 27 March, 1827). William died 4 December 1899.
William enlisted in May of 1861 in Capt. James McHenry’s Co., Col. John P. Murray’s Regiment. William stated that at the time of application, he was totally disabled due to rheumatism contracted by exposure to the elements while in active service. He was accepted on the pension roll with a monthly pension of $8.33 1/3.
William’s widow, Margaret Fleming Stone, filed a pension application as widow of a Confederate soldier 5 June 1906, stating she lived in Willow Grove, Clay Co., TN.; that her maiden name was Fleming; that she was born in 1833 in Surry Co., NC; that she had lived in TN. since about 1847; that her husband’s name was William R. STONE, that he was born about 1827; that they were married 19 June, 1853 in Overton Co., TN. by Squire Russ Overstreet. She stated that her husband died 4 December, 1899 in Clay Co., TN. She stated she was the mother of 9 children, all girls. Four were dead at the time of the pension application, and five were living. Her youngest one was born about 1866. Her application was #W1531.
