Stewart Family
William Stewart and Elizabeth Van Hooser
From the extraordinary research of Georgenia Stewart, who sadly passed away in 2012.
Elizabeth Van Hooser was born in 1788 in Montgomery County, Virginia, and died in 1843 in Nauvoo, Illinois; her parents were Abraham Van Hooser and Mary Williams. She married about 1807, in Tennessee, William Stewart.
Elizabeth moved with her parents to Grainger County, Tennessee, and later to Overton County, Tennessee, where she met and married William Stewart b abt 1786 in Greene County, Tennessee, the son of Joseph Stewart and Sarah Gilbert.
The early marriage records of Overton County, Tennessee are missing, but the Legislative Petitions of 1824 list a petition of William Stewart from Overton County, Tennessee, asking to be granted a divorce. Elizabeth and her husband moved to Madison County, Illinois where one of their sons was born, but returned to Overton County, Tennessee, where they lived until their divorce.
After that, William Stewart md 2) Rebecca Llewellyn and moved to Fayette County, Illinois, where he is found in the 1830 census. About 1834, he moved to what became Lee County, Iowa, and is listed in the 1836 Territory Census there but died in 1837. His widow is listed in the 1840 census of Lee County, Iowa.
As for Elizabeth Van Hooser, she is listed in the 1830 census of that county. After her parents died, she moved to Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, where she died in 1843. History from Joyce Lindstrom, Van Hooser Book.
William Stewart was born about 1780-86, either in Yadkin or Stokes or Forsyth County, NC, or Greene County, TN, and died in 1837 in Lee County, IA. He was the son of Joseph Stewart and Sarah Gilbert.
Joseph Stewart migrated with his family to Overton County (then Davidson or Sumner County), where son William met and married Elizabeth Van Hooser. The Stewarts seem to have migrated between Illinois and Tennessee, after which William Stewart abandoned his family. All but one child, Levi, is said to have been born in Overton County.
William Stewart and Elizabeth Van Hooser were parents of the historical Mormon figure, Levi Stewart, and other early Stewart Latter-Day Saints.

Joseph Stewart and Jane “Jennie” Davis
Contributed by James Stewart
Joseph STEWART migrated from NC about 1795. Much is recorded in Overton County.
Joseph and Jane “Jennie” Davis STEWART moved to Johnson County, Arkansas, in 1835 along with several other families.
They settled in Johnson County, AR, along the Mulberry river. Most of the family stayed there for almost 100 years — some still live in the area.
With the advent of the automobile and better communications, our family is now spread all over the country. When Oklahoma opened up for settlement, some migrated even further west, while some moved to Texas. We have been able to contact many of the descendants of them.
