Funeral services for Effie Mae Asberry, 86, of Wells Road, Crossville, who passed away July 6, 1997 in Cumberland Medical Center, were held July 8 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. She was born Sept. 30, 1910 in Overton County, the daughter of Allen and Etlee Cole Mabrey. Mrs. Asberry had been employed at Cumberland Laundry and was a member of Mt. Zion Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Thelma and Rainey Brown of Crossville and Velma and Clyde Pedigo of Kingston; son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Derothia Asberry of Crossville; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and sister, Lydia Branstetter of Deerlodge. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Asberry; daughter Sue Asberry Threet; brothers, Fred, Willy, Arde, and Dewey Mabrey; and sisters, Ida Padgett and Dorothy Kyle. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Charles Asberry, Michael Asberry, Jimmy Pedigo, Jimmy Inman Jr., Steve Threet, Michael Lee Asberry and Jeremy Asberry. Bros. Funeral services for Pauline “Granny” Bailey, 87, of Plateau Road, Crossville, who passed away Dec. 27, 1998, were held Dec. 30 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bros. Raymond Lawson and William Wiley officiated, with special music by Molly and Bruce Wyatt, and Ashley Stowers. The eulogy was given by Garry W. Hood. She was born Oct. 15, 1911 in Overton County, TN, the daughter of Other and Nora Hargis Cannon. Mrs. Bailey was a homemaker and she was a charter member of Lawrence Chapel Church of God of Prophecy. Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Georgia Mae and Barton Wilson, and Betty and M.L. Deck, all of Crossville; sons a daughters-in-law, Willard Bailey of Kingston, TN, and Harry and Brenda Bailey, Larry and Lucille Bailey, and Michael Bailey, all of Crossville; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Polson and Louise Wyatt, both of Crossville; and brother, Milford Cannon of Crossville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Bailey; daughter, Margaret Ruth Bailey; and son, Charles Kenneth Bailey. A memorial service for Sam Joel Beaty, 74, of Potato Farm Road, Crossville, who passed away April 11, 1998, was held April 15 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home. He was born Feb. 2, 1924 in Overton County, the son of Herman and Pearl Vaughn Beaty.
Mr. Beaty was a welder for General Processing Company, and he was of the Protestant faith. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and was a prisoner of war. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Sevier Beaty of Crossville; stepchildren, Kay Barnett, Joann Ramsey, and Mike Staggs, all of Crossville, Eddie Staggs of Pikeville, and Fred Staggs of Big Lick; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Pat Beatty, Frank Beaty, and Dock Beaty, all of Crossville; and sisters, Erma Smith of Canoga Park, CA, Willie May Kline of North Hollywood, CA, Helen Clark of Nacogdoches, TX, and Judy Humble of Crossville. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Beatty, and grandson, Jackie Staggs. Bro. Robert Baker officiated. The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Cumberland County. Funeral services for James Deloy Blaylock, 60, of Pleasant Hill, who passed away Feb. 5, 1999, were held Feb. 8 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in the Old Pleasant Hill Cemetery. He was born April 25, 1938 on Overton County, TN, the son of Charlie Blaylock and Avo Looper Blaylock. Mr. Blaylock was a carpenter, and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended Plateau Independent Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lena Brown Blaylock of Pleasant Hill; son, Scott Blaylock of Pleasant Hill; daughter, Amanda Futrell of Westel, TN; stepson, Trent Lewis of Pleasant Hill; and sisters, Eva Phillips, Anna Jean Qualls, Willadean Swika and Betty Qualls, all of Crossville, Zenobia Qualls of the Vandever community, and Josephine Hargis of Dearborn, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Avo Looper Blaylock, and brothers, Charles and Harold Blaylock. Funeral services for Jesse Dowe Boles, 78, of Crossville, who passed away Aug. 18, 1997 in Cumberland Medical Center, were held Aug. 20 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Pomona Cemetery.
He was born Jan. 21, 1919 in Overton County, the son of Jerry Adams Boles and Dora Ethel Crouch Boles. Mr. Boles was a heavy-equipment operator and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Survivors include Darlene Stiles of LaGrange, OH; grandchildren, Brian and Kristi; and sisters, Chloe Newberry, Lillie Anderson, and Lois Cox, all of Crossville. Pallbearers were Darwin Scarlett, Darcy Yonts, Don Lewis, Brian Stiles, Chuck Stiles and Harlan Cox. The Rev. Russell Honeycutt officiated. Bilbrey Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Funeral services for Eva MacGillivray Bowman, 85, of Allred, TN, who passed away July 20, 1999, were held July 23 from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home in Livingston, TN, with burial in Overton County Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Doug Turner officiated.
She was born Dec. 31, 1913, in Bad Axe, MI, the daughter of Ella and William MacGillivray.
Mrs. Bowman and her husband, Fred, operated Bowman’s Grocery Store in the Steel Bridge community of Overton County from 1947 to 1965. She then worked at the Crawford Head Start Center, and at the Upper Cumberland Development Center until her retirement. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Livingston, Chapter No. 206. She had a love for music and played the piano for more than 70 years. She was organist for the Livingston Eastern Star for many years, and grand organist for the Tennessee Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Nancy Bowman of Fairfield Glade, and Donald and Betty Bowman of Memphis; grandchildren, Sharon Voehringer and William Bowman, Elizabeth Bowman, Fred Bowman and Martha Bowman, all of Memphis; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Bowman, in 1967.

Funeral services for James Harold Bowman, 58, of Monterey, who passed away Nov. 14, 1999, will be held Nov. 16 from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home. The Revs. Kevin Phillips and David Harris will officiate, with full military honors presented by a delegation from Fort Campbell, KY. Burial will be in Welch Memorial Cemetery. He was born Oct. 30, 1941 in Overton County, the son of Cora Tudor and Joe B. Bowman. Mr. Bowman was a retired U.S. Army veteran, earning the rank of sergeant first class (E-7). His service included tours in Korea, Japan and Germany. He was of the Baptist faith. Funeral services for Joe Edward Breeding, 63, of Glenwood Circle, Crossville, who passed away Sept. 30, 1997 at Veterans Administration Hospital in Nashville, will be held today, Oct. 3, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in the West Cemetery in Putnam County.
He was born March 25, 1934 in Overton County, TN, the son of Nora Lee Breeding and William Clennie Breeding. Mr. Breeding was a diesel mechanic and an Army veteran. Survivors include his mother, Nora Breeding of Sparta; daughter, Barbara Breeding of Crossville; grandchildren, Brian, Paul, Tiffany and Laura; brothers, James Lee Breeding of Corona, CA, William Breeding Jr. of Rock Island, TN, and Jerry Breeding of Sparta; and sisters, Betty Rigsby of McMinnville, and Irene Becker of Sparta. Calahan, 68, of Burnett Street, Crossville, who passed away March 18, 1998, were held March 21 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. He was born Jan. 110, 1930 in Overton County, the son of Tommy R. Calahan and Earcil Mae Woody Calahan. Mr. Calahan was retired from the Tennessee Department of Employment Security. He was a Korean War veteran, earning a good conduct medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He was a member of Homestead Baptist Church; a 32nd degree Mason; member of the Scottish Rite; a Shriner; and a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his wife, Ann S. Calahan of Crossville; brothers, Everette Calahan and Earnest Calahan, both of Crossville, and Bobby Calahan of Chattanooga; sister, Betty Stubbs of Crossville; aunt and uncles; nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was born June 7, 1927 in Overton County, TN, the daughter of Foister Looper and Susie A. Kimes Looper. Mrs. Carpenter was a retired production worker for General Motors Corporation, and attended United Brethren Church.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Ernest Carpenter of Fairfield Glade; sons and daughters-in-law, David Michel and Jeane Carpenter of Arizona, and Mark Kevin and Vickie Carpenter of Texas; daughter-in-law, Cinthia Carpenter of Illinois; brother, Gentry L. Mr. Clark was born Oct. 19, 1906 in Overton County to the late Hardy S. and Eliza Jane Poteet Clark. He was a retired barber, serving the Monterey area for many years and a member of the Monterey First Baptist Church. Survivors include his daughter, Delores Swafford of London, Ky.; sons, Jimmy Clark of Sparta and Tommy Clark of Monterey; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mary Girlie Clark, 91, of Monterey, who passed away Feb. 23, 1997, were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26 from the chapel of Horner Funeral Home with interment at the Welch Memorial Cemetery. Rev. Bill Vance, Rev. William J. Powell and Rev. Ovle Tinch officiated.
Pallbearers were Jeff Heiderich, Rocky Overstreet, Paul Gilpatrick, Kenneth Vaden, Ross Snodderly and Clyde Honeycutt. Honorary Pallbearers were the nurses and staff at the Standing Stone Health Care Center and Med-Shares. Mrs. Clark was born Feb. 2, 1906 in Overton County and was the daughter of the late Tom and Sarah Qualls Bowman. She was a homemaker and a member of the Monterey First Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Clark; children, Glemma A. Clark and George W. Clark Jr.; brother, Lon Bowman; sisters, Rillie Cates, Lizzie Tinch, Mae Vaughn and Martha Honeycutt. Funeral services for Thomas Denton Cole, 90, of the Homesteads community, who passed away July 23, 1998, were held July 25 at the Pleasant Hill Community Church, with burial in Old Pleasant Hill Cemetery. He was born Nov. 11, 1907 in Overton County, the son of Luther E. and Mary Alba Gibbons Cole.
Mr. Cole was a retired school teacher and the oldest member of Pleasant Hill Community Church. He was born Jan. 6, 1916, in Overton County, the son of Campbell Washington Copeland and Dora Sevier Copeland. Mr. Copeland was an employee of street maintenance in Wood River, IL and a member of Faith Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of American Legion Post 163. Survivors include his wife, Mary Copeland of Crossville; sons, Robert Copeland of Holt, MI, and Terry Copeland of Maryville, TN; stepdaughter, Barbara Woody of Crossville; stepson, Robert Creamer of Everett, WA; grandchildren, Joe Jr., Randy, Kevin and Jeffery Woody; great-grandchild, Christopher Woody; special little girl, Katie Kington; and sisters, Maggie Woody and Georgia Rector, both of Crossville. Gilead Cemetery. She was born Nov. 10, 1926 in Overton County, TN, the daughter of Wayne and Emily Breeding. Mrs. Dailey was a homemaker, and she was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Eldridge was born Dec. 1, 1924 in Overton County to the late George and Rosie Ann Vaughn Gaines. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Eldridge; sisters, Sarah Jane Bilbrey, Nerva Martin, Callie and Delcie Gaines; and brother, Thomas Gaines. She was born Sept. 29, 1910 in Overton County, the daughter of Richard Laken Mitchell and Lucinda Terry Mitchell. Mrs. Emrich was a teacher, and she was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, John Emrich, of Crossville; several nieces and nephews; stepson, Norman Emrich of Livermore, CA; stepdaughter, Donna Young of Concord, CA; step grandchildren, Brian Emrich, Brad Emrich, Lisa Emrich, Kelly Kennedy, Teri Richardson and Brenda Fontes, step greatgrandchildren, Scottie and Kyle Emrich, Michael Fontes and Randy and Rachel Richardson.She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Lucinda Mitchell.

He was born Oct. 5, 1927 in Crawford, TN; the son of Bill and Laura Copeland Goggins. Mr. Goggins was the owner and operator of Jim’s Refrigeration and Air Conditioning in Dayton for more than 30 years. Survivors include his daughters, Sherry Jackson of Layton, UT, and Carla Saunders, Tammy Goggins, and Crystal Goggins, all of Dayton; brother, Glen Goggins of Monterey; sisters, Martha Chilton of Battle Creek, MI, Anna Herrell of Decatur, AL, and Lillian Shumate of Crossville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Matheny Hammons. The Rev. Hammons was a carpenter, builder and minister. He was a member of Smith Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Mr. Short was born Oct. 24, 1928 in the Shady Grove community to the late Walter and Hattie Cunningham Short. He was a retired factory worker, a carpenter, a Korean War Army veteran, and a member of the Fairview Freewill Baptist Church where he served a deacon. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Joe Hollis Short and George Thomas Short; sisters, Jane Bowman and Cora Fee. Russell Honeycutt officiated. Mr. Vance died Tuesday March 25, 1997 in the Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville. A resident of Cumberland County, he was born in Overton County Dec. 4, 1918 to the late William Bryan and Stella Mae “Maxwell” Vance. He was retired from the United States Postal Service in Crossville and was a funeral director and embalmer in the area for many years, having graduated from the John A. Gupton College in 1947, in Nashville. He was a member of the First Baptist church in Crossville for many years. He served in World War II in the U.S. Army. His family includes his wife, Ineta Vance of Crossville; sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Bill and Debbi Vance of Monterey and Steve and Pam Vance of Crossville; grandchildren, Casey and Cathy Vance of Monterey and Nathan and Jordan Vance of Crossville; sisters, Mary Ruth Young of Lebanon, Tenn., and Imogene Poston of Livingston, Tenn.; and brother, Keith Vance of Livingston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold and Louis Vance. The Sanctuary Class of the First Baptist Church of Crossville served as Honorary Pallbearers.
