Alvin P. and Uretha (Copeland) Vaughn
Alvin P. Vaughn, 37th Kentucky Mounted Infantry Regiment, Union Alvin rode his horse to Kentucky and joined the Union Army on October 6, 1863. He was inducted into Company F of the 37th Kentucky Mounted Infantry Regiment. This regiment served as a blocking force against a raid into Kentucky by the Confederate raider John Hunt Morgan. After this expedition was over in the fall of 1864, the Regiment moved into southwestern Virginia and fought battles at Abingdon and Saltville. The Regiment then returned to Kentucky and the troops were mustered out of the army. Alvin was discharged at Louisville on December 29, 1864. During the term of service, the Regiment suffered eight battle-related and 106 disease-related fatalities. Pictured with Alvin is his second wife, Uretha COPELAND VAUGHN. -- contributor Edward H.
