William C. “Billy” Hughes
contributor Ron Dishman, Overton County Historian
William C. “Billy” Hughes was born December 14, 1841. The date on his headstone is incorrect. He died December 19, 1917, at the age of 86.
Billy served in the 25th Tennessee Inf. Co. B, as a private and was wounded in battle. He was the only son of Leander and Isabel Hughes.
Billy was the father of 10 children. He was also a carpenter and taught Sunday School at the Concord School and Church. He helped to build a lot of the houses in Hillham. He was to my understanding a wonderfully kind, loving and deeply religious man.

Matthew William Hughes was born November 1890, and he died July 5, 1938. He was the son of William C. “Billy” and Perrilla (Copeland) Hughes.
Matthew was also a veteran. He enlisted at Camp Oglethorpe, Georgia May 13, 1918. He received an Honorable Discharge December 11, 1919, from Camp Sevier, South Carolina.
Matthew was the father of two daughters, Ethel “Bernice”, and Mary Wilma, Mary is my mother. Bernice passed away 26 years ago. Mary still lives in Noblesville, Indiana.
Matthew has 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren. It is sad to think he never knew any of us since he passed when my mother was only three years old. That is why I am trying to keep his memory alive.
Matthew, as well as his parents, brother, and sister all are all buried at Concord Cemetery.
My grandmother was Sarah “Addie” McClain Hughes. She was the daughter of John and Emma (Hampton) McClain. Addie is buried at McDonald Cemetery.
