Guntertown Slide Road Petition, 1982
This document was submitted to the Pickett County Historical & Genealogical Society Facebook Group by Tedd Masiongale in August, 2021, with the following notation:
In 1982 my grandmother, Edith Smith, and I drove around Guntertown, Robbinstown and Double Top collecting signatures (you may find your family names attached to it) in an effort to reopen the Guntertown Slide Road. Coal trucks had damaged it. Reclamation to the damaged land had not been done and when it became impassable it increased the travel time for the mailman and added time for a trip to Double Top and Jamestown. We petitioned many government officials and, since the road lies primarily in Fentress County, we requested help from their county commission. We don’t know if our efforts eventually resulted in the new (current) road being built but about ten years later land reclamation did occur to some extent and a new road was created.
