Rowland Flowers’ Revolutionary War Pension Application Abstract
Rowland Flowers applied for revolutionary pension while living in Fentress County, Tennessee, in July, 1834. He was born, in 1846 in Buckingham County, Virginia, and was the son of James Flowers. He was reared in Buckingham and Campbell Counties, Virginia. While he was a resident of Buckingham County he enlisted in the spring of 1781 and served three months in Captain Silas Williams’ Virginia Company. At the close of this service he enlisted as a substitute for this father in Captain Peter Gearin’s company under Major Bois in Virginia troops and was at the Seige of Yorktown and at the surrender of Cornwallis, serving three months. After the war he continued to reside in Virginia until he was 22 years of age when he moved to Overton County, Tennessee. He drew pension in Fentress County, that part which had been in Overton County. He died in Fentress County, September 23, 1837. He married in Buckingham County, Virginia, about December 1, 1782, Ann or Anna Jarot or Garrott, who was born about March 15, 1762. She applied for pension in October, 1838, while residing in Fentress County. She died May 29, 1854. They had twelve children as follows: William, the eldest, born about August 1783; Betsey; James; Rowland, Jr.; Arthur; Rosanna; Maggie; Sally; Polly; Delila and Judy. Judy, the youngest child aged 31 in 1838, married Rodney King and had eight children. In 1834, Anthony Flowers, a younger brother of the soldier, was aged 61 years and lived in Fentress County.
