Lydia Estes Alexander, 79, of Crossville, passed away Nov. 24, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Nov. 25 at Monroe Christian Church, with burial in Story Cemetery. Glen Winningham officiated.
Mrs. Alexander was born Feb. 3, 1921, in Overton County, TN, the daughter of H.O. and Lona Story.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her daughters, Ilene Teeple of Crossville and Brenda Bilbrey of Nashville, TN; brother, O.B. Story of Monroe, TN; and four grandchildren, James Bilbrey, Alice Bilbrey, John Teeple and Daniel Teeple.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Alexander; and her parents, H.O. and Lona Story.
Pallbearers were James Bilbrey, Leon Story, Floyd Earl Story, John Story, Willie Qualls and Mark Garner.

Mirtie Jewel Ashburn Anderson, 96, of the Homestead community of Crossville, passed away Sept. 5, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 8 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, witih burial in Crossville City Cemetery. The Rev. Dan Haskins officiated, with special music by Chris South and Joy Goad.
Mrs. Anderson was born April 22, 1906, in Overton County, TN, the daughter of William Calvin and Sarah Ann Stamps Ashburn.
She was an original Homesteader, and was a member of Cumberland Homesteads Baptist Church. She was retired as a cook for the Cumberland County School System and for Cumberland Mountain State Park.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Sara Anderson of Crossville, Ralph and Patricia Anderson of Knoxville, and William and Janet Anderson of Pleasant Hill; daughters and sons-in-law, Bettie and Frank Hargis of Lenoir City, TN, and Faye and Danny Hassler of Crossville; brother, Orthel Ashburn of Plant City, FL; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix Basil Anderson; and son, Bobby Gaskel Anderson.
Pallbearers were Daniel Hassler II, Mark Hargis, Ricky Anderson, Scott Anderson, Gary Hargis, Jeffery Anderson, William Anderson and Mike Anderson.

Donna Elvena Ashburn, 95, of Crossville, passed away June 15, 2001. Funeral services were conducted June 18 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. Bro. Phil Jenkins officiated.
Mrs. Ashburn was born March 5, 1906, in Overton County, TN, the daughter of Ed and Oella Matheny Hammons.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Homesteads Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Nannie Deane Ashburn of Crossville and Charles and Alice Ashburn of Paducah, KY; sisters, Mary Roberson of Benton, KY, Edna Randolph of East Peoria, IL, and Margaret Roberts of Atlanta, GA; brothers, Ernest Hammons of Petersburg, TN, Troy Hammons and L.C. Hammons, both of Fayetteville, TN, Beecher Hammons of Harriman, TN, and Albert Hammons of Dayton, TN; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard D. Ashburn.

Edward “Ed” Bice, 68, of Crossville, passed away March 29, 2001. Funeral services were conducted April 1 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. Bro. Lyle Ledbetter officiated.
Mr. Bice was born July 14, 1932, in Overton County, TN, the son of Edward Gaither and Leona Walker Bice.
He was a self-employed mechanic.
Survivors include his brothers, Andy Bice and Doyle Bice, both of Crossville; sister, Frances Martell of Crossville; special nephews, Jamie Bice and Michael Bice, both of Crossville; special great-nephew, A.J. Bice of Crossville; and special great-niece, Tabitha Bice of Crossville.

Destel Bilbrey, 75, of Clarkrange, passed away Aug. 6, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Aug. 9 at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home. The Rev. Bud Hargis and the Rev. Michael Swallows will officiate, with interment to follow in Midway Cemetery.
Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.
Mr. Bilbrey was born March 19, 1926, in Overton County, TN, the son of Vanus and Ova Della Phillips Bilbrey.
He retired from Manchester Tank in Crossville after 30 years of service, and had also worked in the timber industry. He was a member of the Union B Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Opal Neely Bilbrey of Clarkrange; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Ronald Harris of Monterey; son and daughter-in-law, R.D. and Charlotte Bilbrey of Clarkrange; sisters, Velva Padgett and Delva Melton, both of Monterey; brother, Bestel Bilbrey of Monterey; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Brenda Kay Bilbrey; sisters, Belva Phillips, Elva Swallows, Elsie McCowan and Delsie Swallows; and brothers, Vestel Bilbrey and Estel Bilbrey. Goff Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Emma Bilbrey, 94, of Monterey, passed away Sept. 9, 2002. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m. from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, with interment to follow in Falling Springs Cemetery. The Rev. Ovle Tinch will officiate.
Visitation will be tonight from 5 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Bilbrey was born July 3, 1908, in Overton County, TN, the daughter of Vince and Loursey Upton Hargis.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Monterey United Methodist Church. She was a 1931 graduate of Crawford High School.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Betty Lou and Ray Higgins of Cookeville; grandchildren, Carolyn Harris, Thomas Buttram and Bobby Buttram, all of Monterey, Sara Howell of Algood, Donna Robinson of Cookeville and Kenny Buttram of Sparta; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Bilbrey; brothers, Ike Hargis, Benton Hargis and Buren Hargis; and sisters, Anna Mae Crabtree, Dessie Norrod, Edna Hargis, Martha Hargis and Zola Hargis.

Willie Verton Bilbrey, 86, of Crossville, passed away Nov. 4, 2000, in Cumberland Medical Center. No services are planned.
Mr. Bilbrey was born Jan. 2, 1914, in Overton County, TN, the son of John and Florence Tinch Bilbrey. He was a retired used car dealer.
Survivors include his brothers, Lee Burton Bilbrey of Vandalia, OH, and Bonnie Benton Bilbrey of Missouri; nephews, Doyle Looper and Johnny Rabon Looper, both of Cookeville, TN; Timothy Allen Bilbrey and Vandalia, and John Paul Bilbrey of Kansas; and nieces, Lola Lee Walters of Vandalia, and Barbara Jean Warner of Phoenix, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Florence Bilbrey; his wife, Judy Farley Bilbrey; and a sister, Audi Avo Bilbrey Looper. Joseph “Joe” Henry Blaylock, 68, of Crossville, passed away June 7, 2002. Funeral services were conducted June 10 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. Frank Walker officiated, with special music by the McNeal family.
Mr. Blaylock was born April 25, 1934, in Overton County, TN, the son of John and Bessie Bilbrey Blaylock.
He was a foreman at UT Experimental Farm, and a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Kring Blaylock of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and David Dixon of Cookeville; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Angie Blaylock of Crossville; brother, Jay Blaylock of Crossville; sisters, Marie McNeal of Crossville, and Juanita Qualls and Anna Campbell, both of Rickman, TN; and grandchildren, Matt Blaylock, Dylan Blaylock and Philip Dixon.

Claude Bowman, 80, of Roseville, MI, passed away Feb. 17, 2001, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, TN. Joint funeral services for Mr. Bowman and his brother, David Bowman, will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, TN, with burial at Love Joy Cemetery. The Rev. Clayton Padgett will officiate, with full military honors presented by the Veterans Honor Guard.
Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.
Mr. Bowman was born Jan. 24, 1921, in Overton County, TN, the son of Walter Lee and Faith Masters Bowman.
He was a millwright, and a member of the Millwright Union Local No. 1102 in Michigan. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a past VFW post commander in Howard City, MI. He was a commissioner of Roseville from 1950 to 1956.
Survivors include his sons, Lonnie J. Bowman of Warren, MI, and John Claude Bowman Jr. of Columbus, OH; sister, Beryle Eaton of Rockwood, TN; brothers, Ray Bowman of Rockwood and Walter Bowman of Monterey; grandson, Robert John Bowman; and one great-grandson, R.J. Bowman.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Bowman and Helen Eaton; and two brothers, Leslie Bowman and Marshall Bowman.

He was a retired machinist for General Motors. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of the Crossville VFW Post No. 5025. He was a member of the Royal Oak Masonic Lodge in Madison Heights, MI, where he was a past master. He was a Royal Arch mason at Chapter No. 167 in Madison Heights. He was a fund raiser for the Special Olympics.
Survivors include his daughter, Rita Bowman of Brighton, MI; son, Michael Bowman of Bozeman, MT; sister, Beryle Eaton of Rockwood, TN; brothers, Ray Bowman of Rockwood and Walter Bowman of Monterey; and three grandchildren, Andrew Sochocki, Meghan Sochocki and Ezra Bowman.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Bowman and Helen Eaton; and two brothers, Leslie Bowman and Marshall Bowman.

Harshel Bowman, 82, of Hanging Limb, TN, passed away March 28, 2001. Funeral services were conducted March 30 from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, with interment in Hanging Limb Cemetery. The Rev. J.B. Harris, the Rev. Johnny Jones and the Rev. Jerry Harris officiated. Full military honors were presented by the Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Bowman was born Aug. 3, 1918, in Overton County, TN, the son of Grant and Nellie Key Bowman.
He was a retired factory worker and a farmer, and was of the Baptist faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of the Livingston VFW.
Survivors include his daughter, Gail Harris of Hanging Limb; sons, Bruce Bowman, Lavon Bowman and Troy Bowman, all of Hanging Limb; sisters, Hazel Norod and Roxie Walker, both of Hanging Limb; brother, A.G. Bowman of Hanging Limb; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Deb Guffey of Hanging Limb. He was preceded in death by his two wives, Lula Phillips Bowman and Lou Ann Bowman; and five brothers, Ivor Bowman, Clarence Bowman, Clayton Bowman, Cortes Bowman and Marce Bowman. Eula Brown, 68, of Crossville, passed away May 12, 2000, at home. Funeral services were conducted May 14 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Bethlehem Cemetery in Overton County. The Rev. Mike Garrett officiated.
Mrs. Brown was born May 12, 1932, in Cumberland County, the daughter of Dan and Lydia Kerley Hayes.
She was a store clerk and a member of Meridian Baptist Church.
Survivors include her parents, Dan and Lydia Hayes of Crossville; daughters, Jo Ann Thurman of Crossville and Patty Morgan of Las Vegas, NV; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Gretchen Thurman of Crossville; brother, Eugene Hayes of Grafton, OH; sister, Joyce Brady of Crab Orchard; stepsons, Aaron Brown and Michael Brown, both of Nashville; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Zora Brown, 96, of Russellville, died Aug. 10, 2002 at her daughter’s residence in Gilbertsville.
She was born in Overton County, Tenn. on Dec. 2, 1905, a daughter of the late Elvie Bailey and Becky Brown Bailey. She was preceeded in death by her hsuband, J.B. Brown, and her sons, J.K. Herman and James Brown.
Mrs. Brown was a seamstress for Red Kap Industries and a member of the Gospel Tabernacle Church.
Funeral services were held Aug. 14 at Gospel Tabernacle Church, with Bro. Craig Jackson and Bro. Tim Hughes officiating. Burial followed in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
Palbearers were Kyle Dowell, Joshua Birdwell, Mickey Dowell, Jeremy and Timothy Gidcumb and Dale Hughes.
Mrs. Brown is survived by her son, Tomy Brown of Bowling Green; her daughters, Eva Hooper of Vandalia, Ohio, Linda Alexander of Kttering, Ohio, and Fran Taylor of Gilbertsville; her brothers Elmo Bailey of Coffeeville, Miss. and Arnel Bailey of Flint, Mich.; here sisters, Louvene Box and Daisey Grimsley, both of Exerter, Calif.; and Trudy Simpson of Memphis, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.”

Beatrice W. Burgess, 82, of Cookeville, TN, passed away April 17, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 19, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Whitson Funeral Home in Cookeville, with Bro. Glen McDoniel and Bro. Johnny Fox officiating. Burial will be in Judd Cemetery in Putnam County, TN.

Mrs. Burgess was born Aug. 3, 1918, in Overton County, TN.

Joann Burkhart, 67, of Knoxville, passed away Oct. 2, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 5 from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, with interment in Shady Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Clayton Padgett officiated.
Mrs. Burkhart was born May 10, 1935, in Overton County, TN, the daughter of Cora Mae Looper and Allison Wilson.
She had owned Farragut Diner, and at the time of her death owned and operated Joann’s Restaurant on Union Ave. in Knoxville.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Zack and Marsha Bohannon of Crossville; sister, Edith Clark of Dayton, OH; brother, Harold Wilson of Knoxville; grandchildren, Chelsea Bohannon, Katelin Bohannon, Shawn Hatfield and Heather Hatfield; great-grandchildren, Zackary, Michelia, Dallas and D.J.; and special friend, Charles Kilpatrick of Knoxville, and his two sons, Brad and Chad Kilpatrick, both of Chattanooga.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Hoyt Wilson and Ed Wilson.

HERMAN HERSCHEL CARR

Herman Herschel Carr, 93, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 5, 2001, after a recent illness at WyndRidge Health and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 7 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. Bro. Phil Jenkins and Bro. Wade Webster officiated, with special singing by the Church of Christ Singers.
Mr. Carr was born Sept. 9, 1907, in Overton County, TN, the son of William and Susan Handy Carr.
A long-time resident of Cumberland County, Mr. Carr was the well-known owner of My Barber Shop, and also owned the Travel Court on Hwy. 70 for several years. He was a respected church leader, businessman and devoted family man. An active member of Crossville Church of Christ, he once served as elder. He was also involved with the VFW and the Senior Citizens Club.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines, and is said to have been a barber to Gen. Douglas MacArthur. In 1998 he was honored by the Dept. of Veteran Affairs as being the oldest living veteran in Cumberland County.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed playing basketball and played for the Alpine Institute at a national tournament in 1926. An avid gardener, he spent much of his later years growing flowers at various places in Crossville. His warm personality and sense of humor were what made him a special person. His love of reading the Bible and singing church hymns was very much a part of his life. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his daughter, Jeannetta Toungette of Nashville; daughter-in-law, Margaret Beaty of Crossville; stepdaughter, Mary Nell Robinette of Kingsport, TN, stepsons, Gene Webb and James Webb, both of Dayton, OH; sister, Myrtle Norris of Rickman, TN; granddaughters, Angela Toungette and Theresa Toungette, both of Nashville; and numerous stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two loving wives, Mary Lowe Carr and Lorene Webb Carr; and a brother, Claude Carr.
Pallbearers were members of Crossville Church of Christ, Eddie Brown, Bill Foland, Tate Welch, Elmo Lewis, Ray Jernigan and Larry McDuffee.

Betty Coleman, 80, of Livingston, TN, passed away Oct. 8, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 10 at First Christian Church in Livingston, with burial in Overton County Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Coleman was born Oct. 26, 1921, in Connecticut, the daughter of Thomas C. and Margret Elizabeth Worley Keefe.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Coleman of Livingston; son, Ken Stephens of Crossville; stepsons, Johnny Fred Coleman and Jim Coleman, both of Livingston; daughters, Barbara Buckner and Sue Winningham, both of Tullahoma, TN; stepdaughter, Betty Ledbetter of Livingston; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Walter Fowski of Easton, CT; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

M.C. Cooper, 73, of Clarkrange, TN, passed away Dec. 1, 2000, in Cumberland Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Dec. 4 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. Bro. Bobby Floyd officiated.
Mr. Cooper was born April 14, 1927, in Overton County, TN, the son of Savage and Margaret King Cooper.
He was a coal miner, and a member of the Church of God.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Cooper of Clarkrange; sons, Roy Cooper of Crossville and Gene Cooper of Georgia; daughters, Teresa Green, Jannie Green and Marie Elkins, all of Crossville, and Bertha Moore of Murfreesboro, TN; brother, J.T. Aron V. Ferrill, 87, of Livingston, TN, passed away Jan. 21, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Jan. 24 from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home in Livingston, with burial in Carr Cemetery. The Rev. Tim Wilson officiated.
Mr. Ferrill was born Aug. 6, 1914, in Overton County, TN, the son of Everett Dallas and Nora Carr Ferrill.
He was a mechanic and farmer, and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his sons, Gerald Ferrill and Carl Ferrill, both of Livingston, Charles Ferrill of Algood, TN, and Rex Ferrill of Lake Odessa, MI; daughters, Jane Ruzansky of Philadelphia, PA, and Sue Choate of Battle Creek, MI; brother, J.C. Ferrill of Livingston; sisters, Beatrice Hill, Eva Mae Ferrill and Mary Ferrill, all of Livingston; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Green was born Sept. 26, 1922, in Overton County, TN, the daughter of Lynn Boyd and Ova Armilda Matthews Anderson.
She was a member of Pomona United Methodist Church.

Farrie Lee “F.L.” Hall, 81, of Crossville, passed away Oct. 17, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 19 from the chapel of Burris Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Garden. George Long and Roger Sickmiller officiated. Graveside Masonic services were performed by Past Master Vaughn Davis and Chaplain Bob Usher.
Mr. Hall was born May 4, 1919, in Overton County, TN, the son of Huey and Silvia Ashburn Hall.
He retired as an engineer from TVA, and was assistant funeral director of Burris Funeral Home. He served as a former board member of the First Christian Church of Crossville. He was an ambassador to Alhambra Shrine Club, and was a member of the Valley of Chattanooga Scottish Rite, Amanda Chapter No. 4 Order of Eastern Star, Crossville Lodge No. 483 F&AM, Woodmen of the World, and was former Justice of the Peace in Cumberland County. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a staff sergeant.
Survivors include his wife, Valeria Simcox Hall of Crossville; daughters, Judy Smith and Barbara Tabor, both of Crossville; brother, O’Dell Hall of Knoxville, TN; sister, Trula Bowman of Monterey, TN; granddaughters, Christy Smith and Michelle Robinson, both of Crossville; grandson, Barry Tabor of Crossville; and great-grandchildren, Whitney Tabor, Patrick Robinson and Shelby Tabor, all of Crossville.

Mrs. Phillips was born April 23, 1930, in Monterey, the daughter Charlie and Lovie Ann Jernigan Ford.
She was a homemaker.

Lona Mae Phillips, 92, of Monterey, TN, passed away Sept. 1, 2002. Funeral services were conducted today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Horner Funeral Home, with the Rev. Barry Purser officiating. Interment was in Welch Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Phillips was born March 12, 1910, in Overton County, TN, the daughter of Dailey and Bertie Padgett Howard.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Hanging Limb First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Nelladean and Lonzie Swallows of Monterey; sons and daughters-in-law, Franklin and Carolyn Phillips of Westland, MI, Amos and Jeanette Phillips, and Carlon and Evelyn Phillips, all of Monterey; 17 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Walter F. Pippin, 84, of Cookeville, TN, passed away Dec. 7, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Dec. 9 from the chapel of Rickman Funeral Home in Rickman, TN, with burial in Crestlawn Cemetery, Putnam County, TN.
Mr. Pippin was born March 6, 1916, in Overton County, TN, the son of Asberry Loftis and Sina Vaughn Pippin.
He was a coal miner, and attended Slate Springs Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his daughters, Lola Finley and and Wilma Selby, both of Crossville, Debra Creighton of Nashville, TN, and Frances Loftis of Rickman; sons, A.J. Pippin and Walter Pippin Jr., both of Cookeville, and Lanny Pippin of Dayton, OH; brother, James Pippin of Crossville; sister, Mary Garrison of Monterey, TN; 20 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Willie Ray Shelton, 77, of Mayland, passed away July 20, 2000, at Cumberland Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted July 23 from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, TN. The Rev. J.C. Ford officiated. Interment was in Mayland Cemetery with full military honors by the Monterey VFW Post.
Mr. Shelton was born May 2, 1923, in Overton County, TN, the son of the late Irvin Emerson and Mary Belle Swallows Shelton.
He was a well driller, a school bus driver and a farmer, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Geneva Shelton of Mayland; son, Kenneth Ray Shelton of Cookeville, TN; daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and John Brown of Mayland, and Kathrine and Donny Baisley, Sandra and Danny Brown, Mary and Danny Brewer and Eva and Danny Baisley, all of Crossville; sister, Bonnie Smiddie of Crossville; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was a homemaker, and worked as a dietitian in the Putnam County School System. She was a member of the Algood First Freewill Baptist Church.

Wilson of Cookeville; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Don Stroud of Columbus, OH; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Jean Wilson of Crossville; sister, Cliva Phipps of Monterey; brothers, Homer McCowan and A.C.
