Organized September 28th, 1861; Confederate service October 2, 1861; reorganized May 8, 1862; merged with 84th Tennessee Infantry March 8, 1863 to form 28th Consolidated Tennessee Infantry Regiment; merged into 1st Consolidated Tennessee Infantry Regiment April 9th, 1865; paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina, May 1, 1865. Also called the 2nd Tennessee Mountain Volunteers.

- (1) William Jasper Nelson, Mary Collins great-great grandfather was a member of “Confederate 28 Reg’t Tennessee Vols. (Consolidated). 2 Sgt., Co.K.” Military records list him as W.J. He was captured at Harrison’s Landing on 27 Nov 1863, and spent the rest of the war in Rock Island, Illinois prison. He was first a member of 84th Regiment of Tennessee Infantry.

Fought in the Civil War, at the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tn. He died of wounds while in the Confedrate Army. He served a total of two years, and is buried at the Corinth National Cemetery. He died of wounds received at the Battle of Shiloh, 6 April 1862. - (5) William Edward Kittrell Co H. John Waggoner Jr. wife’s ggrandfather, enlisted Oct 21st 1861 at Red Springs and received medical discharge at Murfreesboro in Dec. 1862. He fought at the battle of Fishing Creek. He applied for and received a Confederate pension from State of Tn. Died May 11, l930 and buried near Kempville, TN.
Zebulon McDowell Co H. John Waggoner Jr. wife’s gggrandfather, was enrolled by John P. Murray at Red Springs on Oct 21, 1861 for a period of 12 months. His record shows he died June 5, 1862 at Okalona, Miss. - (7) My second great grandfather had a brother Francis M. Sanders Co I. He mustered in at Camp Zollicoffer in Overton County Sept. 24, 1861.
- (9) My g-g-grandfather James D. Dudney Co D. He was from Jackson County, Tn. He enlisted on August 11, 1861 at Camp Zollicoffer. He served throughout the entire war and was paroled at Greensboro, NC. May 1, 1865 after General Johnston surrendered to General Sherman. James D. Dudney died of a yellow fever epidemic in Mississippi in 1877. The Jim Dudney you have listed in Company E of the 28th consolidated is James M. Dudney who enlisted on September 5, 1861 at Camp Zollicoffer. His records state he was 17 years old and they are attached to the records of James D. Dudney of Company D. “Jim” as the young man in Co. E was called is most likely the son of James in Co. D. Jim’s record abruptly end after April 28, 1862. They don’t say what happened.
