\nJames Milton Hickman, 1916-1920<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \nTo the best of the ability of several Obion Countians, it is believed that Sheriff Easterwood served between Finch and Chiles,\u00a0and is documented as serving\u00a0during 1908 and 1909.\u00a0His name was omitted from the list in Marshall’s “Obion County History.”Obion County History, 1981, p. 143<\/p>\n“T. J. (Easterwood) made bond in (1908) to serve as sheriff.\u00a0For a time the family lived in the jail in Union city, where daughter Martha Alice and granddaughter Mildred were born.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The only reference (found to date) is page 105 of Marshall’s History of Obion County, under the heading “Murder of Rev. Holder,” who was killed 27 December 1906 and Sheriff Finch is mentioned.\u00a0Therefore, the conclusion is that Easterwood\u00a0served from 1908 through 1910.\u00a0Concerning his place in the list, he must have followed John Finch.”Biographies and Family Web Pages” and the minor heading “Bios of Early Settlers,”\u00a0the bio of Joel S. Enloe mentions that he was sheriff from 1826-1836.\u00a0This being true, the first sheriff, Fletcher Edwards must have served from 1824-1826.\u00a0(Enloe was Sheriff on 23 Dec 1836 at least. Alexander Marshall bought his first farm in Obion Co from Sheriff Enlow on that day. Bk 1C pg 382 Thanks Dennis in Union City\u00a9)<\/p>\n Another bio under the same heading, concerns the Polk family.\u00a0In it is the statement, . . . Thomas A. who was sheriff of Obion County from 1836 – 1840.<\/p>\n This being true, the terms of the first three sheriffs are as listed in the table, and the fourth, William Hutchison, must have served at least from 1840-1842.<\/p>\n Further proof that Joel Enloe was still sheriff for the 1834-1836 term is found under “Court Records and Abstracts.”\u00a0Under the 1834 January term, Tuesday, two paragraphs before the heading” (p.10 torn out of book),” is the statement that Joel Enloe was elected [installed?] sheriff.<\/p>\n * Glory and Tears, p. 12: Appointed Special Sheriff<\/p>\n And now, here’s another monkey wrench into the sheriff list. On page 112 of the book “Glory and Tears,” David Hubert is listed as sheriff in 1862 at the time his son was killed at Shiloh.\u00a0How does he fit into the list? \nJohn B. Hogue was sheriff at least from 10\/1849 thru 4\/5\/1852 according to these records I have.\u00a0Do not have before 10\/1849 in my book to know when he actually took office.
\n4\/5\/1852 Elections results states that: In election for county sheriff, John Crockett received 655 votes to John B. Hogue’s 470 votes.\u00a0Crockett posted $12,000 bond.

\nContributor: Gay Mathis<\/p>\n David Hubert was elected special sheriff 8\/1862 then on 9\/1862 William Haislip was elected special sheriff…<\/p>\n Of course, John Fox was elected sheriff 11\/1862 to fill the vacancy created by absense of William S. Scott former sheriff of said county. I would assume that maybe, W. S. Scott may have died, and maybe that is why David Hubert & William Haislip were elected special sheriffs to fill in until they held an election.<\/p>\n Of course, between 11\/1862 & 7\/1865 there were wasn’t any court held for that time during the Civil War..<\/p>\n William H. White was appointed Sheriff 6\/1865 & took oath 7\/3\/1865 to hold office until next election 3\/1866<\/p>\n Thought this tidbit below was interesting, typed as written.\u00a0Two people were accused of taking bribes to cause this problem…..They had to go through Circuit Court to get this settled..<\/p>\n April Term 1866<\/p>\n Ordered by the court that in\u00a0case of the Election held on the 1st Saturday in March 1866 being contested and whole on the grounds of Illegality of said Election the court decided to take it up and investigate the whole Election through this county the “eyes” & “noes” being demanded in the contested election.\u00a0They were as follows those voting in the affirmitive were: Woodfin Naylor, Esq, L. N. Cloys, D. H. Whipple, James Caldwell, W. P. Tate, J. W. Buchanan, W. R. Hogan, W. G. Shaw, T. P. McNeely, W. N. Guin??, W. H. Janes, J. W. Simpson and the “Naes” were C. McAlister and W. J. Wynn, Esq.<\/p>\n William H. White held the office until James B. Walker was sworn in 7\/1\/1867<\/p>\n I didn’t find anything on Joseph R. Brown being Sheriff in the records.\u00a0Do you remember where that info came from?\u00a0It could be that William & I missed that one.\u00a0Will have to look again at that part, again.<\/p>\n Pleasant W.
