This community was in Dyer County, just south of the Obion-Dyer County line. A post office was established here in Obion County in 1828 under the name of Johnsonville, soon after William Terrell opened a ferry here on the Troy-Dyersburg Road. In 1840, this post office officially became part of Dyer County. Later on this became Merriwether’s Ferry, and even later, Lane’s Ferry. Today, it is known as the Lane Community on the Obion River between Elbridge and Dyersburg.

Also known as Merriwether’s Ferry, is located on the Obion River, near the crossing of the Paducah & Memphis R. R., in the extreme northern portion of Dyer County, 12 miles from Dyersburg and about 170 by rail west of Nashville. The ferry was established here about 40 years ago. The present population consists of 3 families. Cotton, grain, cattle, hogs and sheep are the exports from the vicinity. Mail semi-weekly.
