{"id":164,"date":"2012-08-07T22:06:40","date_gmt":"2012-08-08T02:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/obion\/?page_id=164"},"modified":"2021-09-21T22:09:59","modified_gmt":"2021-09-22T03:09:59","slug":"polk-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/obion\/polk-station\/","title":{"rendered":"Polk Station"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Polk Station was named as part of the deal between the Illinois Central Railroad and John Polk when a right of way was needed through the John Polk farm.<\/p>\n<p>John and Agnes Polk (<a title=\"Polk Family\" href=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/obion\/records-data\/biographies-generation-charts\/polk-family\/\">see Polk Family Bio<\/a>) came to Obion County circa 1833 from South Carolina and settled on the highest hill and built a home.\u00a0 Family lore suggests that John might be the son of Ezekiel Polk and uncle of President James K. Polk.\u00a0 He was a successful farmer and the father of eight children who all went to Texas except the two youngest sons, James and William.<\/p>\n<p>William &#8220;Billy&#8221; Polk married in 1856 Susan Harper and they had 14 children, of whom only four daughters and one son married.\u00a0 Some descendants presently live in Obion County.<\/p>\n<p>As a side note, William Polk of North Carolina, a relative of John, gave the fifty acres for the town of Troy and an additional 15 acres for the commons.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Polk Station was named as part of the deal between the Illinois Central Railroad and John Polk when a right of way was needed through the John Polk farm.
