It is named for the Obion River, chief watercourse of the area; the origin of the name is obscure \u2014 possibly an Indian word meaning &#8220;many prongs&#8221; or the name of a French-Irish explorer.<\/p>\n<p>The present county seat is Union City. The first county seat was Troy.
