Peters<var><\/var>\u00a0was one of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>first to\u00a0 enlist.<\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Capt. John W. Staples came to Burrville in May, 1898 and Prof. Peters with several other boys readily gave their <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">names\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">to help <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">Staples make up his company.\u00a0 It was some time later, fearing that Staples would not he able to make up the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">required number for <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">his company, he with five or six other boys learning that there was a recruiting officer for the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">First Tennessee Regiment at Nashville, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">went to Nashville and enlisted in the 1st Tennessee Regiment.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">They were immediately sent to San Francisco, where the regiment <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">was held in training.\u00a0 His regiment was sent to\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">the Philippine Islands late in the year of 1898 where it remained until the summer <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">of 1899.\u00a0 He enlisted as a Private\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">but was promoted corporal.\u00a0 After about 21 months in the army he was honorably discharged <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">at San Francisco,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">Nov. 23, 1899.\u00a0 He was a good soldier.\u00a0 One of his comrades said that he never heard him speak an unkind <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">word\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and that his character was above question.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: 'bookman old style', 'new york', times, serif;font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">Absalom Peters was the grandson of\u00a0 Rev. A.B. Wright for whom the Wright Institute in Burrville was named for. A.B. Peters taught at the Wright Institute as well as schools in Petros and Deer Lodge. In 1917\u00a0 he was elected\u00a0 superintendent of Morgan County schools, he served until his death in 1923.\u00a0 A.B. Peters died 15 days before his 52nd birthday; his health had been compromised by the\u00a0malaria<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', 'new york', times, serif\">he contracted in the Philippines.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium\">The picture was furnished by Jon Peters, grandson of A.B.
