{"id":776,"date":"2014-03-17T14:54:09","date_gmt":"2014-03-17T19:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/morgantn\/?p=776"},"modified":"2017-06-20T22:30:11","modified_gmt":"2017-06-21T03:30:11","slug":"howard-john","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/morgan\/howard-john\/","title":{"rendered":"Howard, John"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\">PENSION APPLICATION OF JOHN HOWARD<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\">MORGAN COUNTY RESIDENT<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 65%\" border=\"4\" cellspacing=\"4\" cellpadding=\"4\" bgcolor=\"#F4F4F4\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-size: xx-small\">State of Tennessee<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: xx-small\">Morgan County<\/span>On this the 21st day of October 1833 personally appeared before the<br \/>\nworshipful court of pleas and quarters session in and for the County of<br \/>\nMorgan aforesaid which is a court of record John Howard a resident<br \/>\ncitizen of the County of Morgan aforesaid in the state of Tennessee aged<br \/>\nsixty six years on the eleventh day of February last, agreeable his<br \/>\nrecord which he formerly kept though he has not had any record for<br \/>\ntwenty four year, lost past the having left his record of his age in<br \/>\nKentucky Christian County, but he distinctly recollects that agreeable<br \/>\nto his said record and the accounts of his parents that he was born<br \/>\nFebruary the eleventh one thousand seven hundred and sixty seven and<br \/>\nafter being duly sworn for that purpose on his oath makes the following<br \/>\nDeclaration in order to obtain the Benefit of the act of Congress on the<br \/>\n7th June 1832.<br \/>\nThat he entered the service of the United States toward the end of<br \/>\nthe Revolutionary he entered said service in Laurince County South<br \/>\nCarolina when he was only in his fifteenth year of age he entered said<br \/>\nservice as a private Volunteer indian spie to serve six months tour<br \/>\nunder Captain Berry his first name not remembered and Lieutenant William<br \/>\nBrown and marched to (Gilberts Fort) near the Cherokee Boundary he<br \/>\nentered said service the precise time not recollected but well<br \/>\nrecollects that it was in the Early part of Spring and thinks about the<br \/>\nfirst of April, he stationed at said fort the full term of six months<br \/>\nending in the fall of one thousand seven hundred and Eighty one.\u00a0 The<br \/>\nprecise day he got dismissed from service not recollected but he thinks<br \/>\nit was about the first of October he was verbally discharged by his said<br \/>\nCapt and returned home, applicant has no documents any Evidence of his<br \/>\nservice and knows of no person by whom he can prove his service<br \/>\napplicant was born in Laurince County South Carolina and continued there<br \/>\nnear twenty years after the war and then moved to Christian County<br \/>\nKentucky and staid here nine years and then moved to Knox County<br \/>\nTennessee and staid there five years and then moved to where he now<br \/>\nlives in Morgan County Tennessee though it was Roane County where he<br \/>\nfirst came to where he now lives applicant states that there is no<br \/>\n(clergyman?) any place near or within his neighborhood\u00a0 and it is out of<br \/>\nhis power to provide one without great Trouble applicant thinks he can<br \/>\nprove his reputation as a man of veracity And as a soldier By George S.<br \/>\nKington, Robert Dabney Elijah Lavender and his neighbors generally,<br \/>\napplicant here by relinquishes Every claim whatsoever to a pension or<br \/>\nannuity Except the present and declares his name is not on the pension<br \/>\nRolls of agency of any State.<\/p>\n<p>(signed\u00a0 John Howard)<\/p>\n<p>Sworn to and subscribed in open court the day and year afforesaide<br \/>\nThomas S. (Lea?)\u00a0 D.C.<\/p>\n<p>We Joseph Holloway, John (Spencer?) residing in the County of<br \/>\nMorgan State of Tennessee do certify that we are well acquainted with<br \/>\nJohn Howard who has subscribed and sworn the foregoing Declaration, that<br \/>\nwe believe him to be upwards of sixty six years of age as he has stated<br \/>\nand that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he resides<br \/>\nTo have been a soldier of the Revolution and a man of veracity and that<br \/>\nwe concur in this.\u00a0 ( document ends)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>John Howard:<br \/>\nBorn February 11, 1767 in Laurens County,\u00a0 SC<br \/>\nDied April 7, 1851 in Lancing, Morgan Co. TN<br \/>\nMarried Nancy Howard, a cousin in Knoxville, Knox Co. Tn<br \/>\non January 20, 1810.
