{"id":185,"date":"2013-12-27T16:42:40","date_gmt":"2013-12-27T22:42:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/morgantn\/?p=185"},"modified":"2017-06-20T22:31:57","modified_gmt":"2017-06-21T03:31:57","slug":"brown-charles-b-1847","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/morgan\/brown-charles-b-1847\/","title":{"rendered":"BROWN, Charles (b. 1847)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Charles Brown<\/b>, a merchant of Wartburg, was born in Lammersheim, Rhine-Baiern Bavaria, Germany, at the castle of the County of Oberndorf, on September 28, 1847.\u00a0 He is the third of nine children born to the marriage of\u00a0<b>Heinrich Edward and Maria Josephine (Fricker)<\/b>\u00a0<b>Brown<\/b>. The father was born August 25, 1810, in Mannheim, Grossherzogthum Baden, and the mother was born April 10, 1817, in Wangen, Konigreich Wurtemburg, her maiden name being\u00a0<b>FRICKER<\/b>. They were married in Mannheim, September 23, 1841.\u00a0 They left the old country August 1, 1850 and reached Wartburg, Tenn., October 3, of the same year, after a long and tiresome trip, the voyage of forty-four days on the ocean being very tempestuous.\u00a0 Upon their arrival here they located about four miles east of Wartburg.\u00a0 They afterward removed to Jacksboro, and thence to Knoxville, where they still reside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Charles remained at home until he reached the age of eight years, when he set out to earn his own living.\u00a0 He lived with a\u00a0<b>Mr. METZER<\/b>\u00a0until he was fifteen years old.\u00a0 He then began to learn the tanner&#8217;s trade under\u00a0<b>JOHN H.\u00a0 BRIENT<\/b>, who had a yard near Montgomery.\u00a0 After completing his apprenticeship, he clerked in the store of Albert\u00a0<b>HURT\u00a0<\/b>for about 2 yers and worked at Clinton for a year.\u00a0 In 1869, in parrtnership with\u00a0 Mr.<b>\u00a0HURT,\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0he sank a tanyard, which was run about two years.\u00a0 On December 24, 1871, he married<b>\u00a0LAURA V<\/b>., daughter of\u00a0<b>John H. BRIENT<\/b>, and soon after began the operation of the tannery, when he had learned the trade.\u00a0 This he continued about one year, after which he worked at various places, finally engaging in business with\u00a0<b>W. H. JONES<\/b>\u00a0at Sunbright.\u00a0 After eighteen months he removed to Wartburg, and entered into partnership with\u00a0<b>JOHN HALL<\/b>, with whom he remained until 1878.\u00a0 He has since been engaged in conducting his present business.\u00a0 His first wife having died, he was in March, 1876, united in marriage with\u00a0<b>JULIA GARRETT<\/b>, to whom have been born five children, four of whom are living.\u00a0\u00a0<b>Mr. Brown<\/b>\u00a0is a successful business man, and is highly esteemed by the community in which he lives.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Source:\u00a0History of Tennessee from the Earliest Time to the Present: Together with an Historical and a Biographical Sketch of from Twenty-Five to Thirty Counties of East Tennessee.
