She was born May 4, 1908 to\u00a0<i>Annie &amp; George York<\/i>\u00a0in Rose, Morgan County, TN. Her father was a school teacher, farmer and store keeper and her mother was local post master and mother of six.\u00a0 Opal graduated from A.B. Wright Institute high school in 1928. She had already experienced working in Ohio before graduation and returned there after school.<\/p>\n<p>She married Ted (S.M.) Brooks on February 16, 1930.
