HORACE JACKSON

Horace Jackson a native of Morgan County was killed in Italy during World War Two. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
I could find no mention of him in the Morgan County Cemetery Book, so I started digging.
Somewhere I saw a reference to him being killed in Italy.
He is the son of LEROY GROTY JACKSON, 1873 – 1940 who is the son of Chesley Boatright Jackson, 1848 – 1915, a former sheriff of Morgan County who is a son of William R. Jackson, 1821 – 1886 who raised 14 children in Morgan County. They are all buried in Morgan County.
He is the Grand nephew of DAVID CROCKETT JACKSON, Civil War Veteran that is buried in the Estes Cemetery.
Horace was a Corporal in the United States Army, serial number 34-493-963, a member of the 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division. He died March 18, 1944 and is buried at: Plot C, Row 11, Grave 34, Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy.
Horace was born in Morgan County on April 7, 1918. He was just short of his 26th birthday when he died. Apparently he never had time to get married so I doubt if there is anyone left to mourn him.
Horace is my 2d cousin, once removed.
His great grandfather WILLIAM R. JACKSON spent his life as a Baptist Preacher in Morgan County. Not a remarkable life until you learn among other things that he represented Morgan County at the Greenville Convention in 1861. His brother-in-Law JOSEPH ALEXANDER COOPER who was to become a Major General represented Campbell County. A total of 30 East Tennessee Counties participated in this convention in an attempt to prevent secession from the Union. The document that these Pro-union delegates drew up, signed and delivered to the Govenor was called a “Declaration of Grievances Adopted at the Greenville Convention.”
