From the Morgan County News dated Sept. 14, 1939

15 YEAR OLD GIRL WEDS MAN OF 78

Morgan County’s first reported child-marriage in more than a year occurred here last Wednesday night when Willie Mae Vespie, 15 became the bride of Andrew J. Neil, 78-year-old widower and great-grandfather.

The marriage was performed – with the consent of the bride’s father, Charlie Vespie, and upon written recommendation by County Judge George W. Dagley – by Squire J.L. Kaufman at his home.

County Court Clerk, Glena K. Ott said she issued the marriage license after the girl’s father appeared with the recommendation. State law requires a parent’s permission and the county judge’s recommendation in such cases.

It is reported the bridegroom has been married several times. He has several children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. & Mrs. Neil left Saturday for Cumberland Falls, Ky., where they will spend a few days before going to Florida.
