1. Called “Iron King” because of his considerable scientific knowledge and fortune made in the iron business, Wm. Stewart was also scholarly.

2. In the 1840’s Stewart was asked to accept professorship in science at Masonic College here (He had once been employed by Smithsonian Inst, est. meteorology as a science).

3. Later he became president of the college, but for lack of funds, he looked to the Presbyterian Synod in 1855 to support. It was given and because of his untiring efforts in behalf of the college, the decision was made to name the college STEWART COLLEGE.

4. Philadelphia born and Princeton educated, Stewart then endeavored to make the college “Princeton of the South” and would have, no doubt, succeeded had the Civil War come along.

5. He died at his country home (near Edrnondson Ferry) called “Glenwood”.
