William Ferguson McGhee
Civil War Soldier
 
William Ferguson McGhee, son of Sampson McGhee and Sarah Ferguson was born in Tennessee on April 12, 1844. 
 
In August 1862 he enlisted in Company G of the 3rd KY Cavalry, John Dortch captain.  He fought in battles at Riggins Hill near Clarksville, Russellville Ky, Edgefield, Hartsville, and Milton where he was badly wounded (shot through the hip).  He was incapacitated about 9 months in the hospital then continued serving until surrendering at Washington, Georgia May 1865.
 
William married Elizabeth (Bettie) Murff July 28, 1869 in Cheatham County where they lived before moving to Montgomery County.  They had 6 children together; Lawrence Erwin, George Emmett, John Foster, Edward Irving, Mary Ward, and Virginia Tennessee.  Sometime after Bettie died in 1901, William adopted another son Walter and he married for a 2nd time to Mary. 
 
In 1911, he submitted Tennessee Confederate pension application #S12833 in Montgomery County for his service in the 3rd KY Cavalry.  He died March 28, 1919 and is buried in the Mt Carmel Methodist Church Cemetery.
