Lewis W. Bourne (1834-1891)
Civil War Soldier
Lewis enlisted in Company "A", 49th Tennessee Infantry at Camp Duncan
near Clarksville, November 29, 1861. He was elected 4th
Sergeant. He was furloughed home sick on February 8, 1862,
returning on September 23, 1862, having served in the interim with the
5th Kentucky Infantry. From October, 1862, until about
February, 1863, Lewis’ unit became Company "G", Bailey’s Consolidated
Regiment; during that time Lewis was absent, sick at a hospital in
Magnolia, Mississippi. In April, 1863, Lewis was detailed from
Camp Cummings, near Mobile, Alabama, to work as a nurse, first at
Silliman Hospital in Clinton, Mississippi, then at French’s Division
Hospital in Lauderdale, Mississippi. In August, 1863, he was at
French’s Division Hospital, this time as a patient. He returned
to work as a nurse at the General Hospital in Lauderdale, and returned
to duty on August 25, 1863. In May, 1864, he received a medical
certificate that he was unable to perform the duties of a soldier in
the field due to chronic dysentery and debility. An officer responsible
for impressing artillery horses and mules requested his assignment for
that work. He was paroled at Jackson, Mississippi, May 12, 1865,
as a private.
