Kay enlisted as a private in Company H, 1st Tennessee Volunteer
Infantry, USA, on May 20, 1898 at Nashville, Tennessee. Company H
left Nashville for San Francisco on June 10, 1898. They were
encamped at Camp Merritt, later at Camp Merriman at the Presidio in San
Francisco, California. As part of the 5th Philippine Expedition,
the company embarked for Manila on the City of Puebla, November 6,
1898. Kay was at Manila when he was promoted to Corporal,
effective January 1, 1899. In December, 1898, he was hospitalized
with acute diarrhea. In March, 1899, he was fined $1.00 for being
AWOL less than 24 hours. In September, 1899, he was again
hospitalized for malarial fever. Company H was stationed at
Manila and Iloilo in the Philippines. Company H embarked for the
US aboard the Indiana September 19, 1899, and was mustered out at the
Presidio, San Francisco, California, November 23, 1898. Their
homecoming celebration is described in Along the Warioto.
Personal information in his records says that he was 22 when he
enlisted, and a resident of Guthrie, Kentucky. His description
says he was 6 feet tall, weighed 143 pounds, had blue eyes and dark
hair. He was single and employed as a clerk.
Kay McCallister remained in the Army and served in World War
I. He later taught ROTC at the University of Florida.
