John O’Brien
CIVIL WAR SOLDIER

John enlisted as a private in Company A, 49th Tennessee Infantry, CSA, at Clinton, Mississippi, on October 1, 1862.  In October, 1862, this company became Company G, Bailey’s Consolidated Infantry Regiment.  He was appointed Ordnance Sergeant on October 16, 1862.  In August, 1863 he was attached to Breckinridge’s Division Hospital 1, in Lauderdale Springs, Mississippi, as a clerk.  There is no record of when he rejoined his regiment, but he may have been with his unit when it was engaged in the battles around Jackson, Mississippi, July 10-16, 1863.  In October, 1863 he was a Camp Cummings, near Mobile, Alabama.  In May, 1864, he may have been with his unit at the battles around Atlanta. The regiment was also at Franklin, Nashville and Bentonville in the winter of 1864-65.  Through a series of consolidations, John completed the war in Company G, Fourth Consolidated Tennessee Infantry.  He was paroled at Raleigh, North Carolina, June 9, 1865.  A copy of John's parole was in his service records.
