Civil War Soldier

 

"Joseph B. Williams is of Welsh descent and was born August 25, 1841, in Montgomery County, Tenn.  His father, Joseph B. Williams, Sr. is a native of the county, born in 1808; he wedded Adaline T. Bridge (sic) and they became the parents of seven children, our subject was the second of the family.  The father died in 1885; the grandfather, Septimus Williams, was born in Virginia; he came to Tennessee in 1795, being the first of the family to settle in this State; he died in 1844.  Our subject secured a fair education in the schools of his native county, and at the breaking of the great civil war enlisted in the Fourteenth Tennessee Infantry, C.S.A., and participated in the principal battles in which his regiment was engaged.  At the close of the war he returned home and began tilling his father's farm.  In 1870 he led to Hymen's alter, M. J. Davis, a native of this county, born in 1841; they have two children: Neva and Jessie R.  Mr. Williams' home is about seven miles from Clarksville; he is a prosperous farmer, and politically he is a Democrat, and is at present magistrate of his district, a position he has held for four years.  He and his wife are members of the Baptist church."
