Montgomery County, TN Confederate Pension Applications

If you believe your Montgomery County Confederate veteran might have moved to another county or state, and want to research further, here is some additional information.

While the Federal government provided pensions for Union veterans and their widows, the responsibility for pensions for Confederate veterans and their widows fell to individual states.  Each of the eleven Confederate states, plus three "border states," Kentucky, Missouri and Oklahoma, enacted Confederate pension laws.  The pensions were generally available to
Confederate veterans and widows who lived in the state, regardless of the state in which the veteran served.  The provisions for eligibility, the application process, and the time the pensions first became available varied from state to state.

The states and the date of the first pension law are below.

1867, Alabama and North Carolina
1870, Georgia
1885, Florida
1887, South Carolina
1888, Virginia and Mississippi
1891, Tennessee, Missouri and Arkansas
1898, Louisiana
1899, Texas
1912, Kentucky
1915, Oklahoma

Pension applications and related records, including both military and family history information, are preserved in each state's archives and can be ordered.  In some states there is an online index.  Florida's archives allows downloading the pension application file in Acrobat format at no charge.

A link to the Tennessee State Library and Archives pension records is below. The page includes a searchable index by county and by name, as well as directions on how to order copies.
