Confederate Veterans Buried in
Riverview (City) Cemetery

Clarksville, Tennessee

Riverview (City) Cemetery was the public cemetery in Clarksville almost from the beginning of the town until Greenwood Cemetery opened in 1873.

Riverview Cemetery received Confederate soldiers who were killed in action, as well as soldiers who died in the hospitals in Clarksville. In 1899, Forbes Bivouac dedicated a monument to 127 unknown Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery.

Mrs. Mable Rosson took a census of the cemetery in 1936 and 1939. A second census was taken in 1970-71. The second census was published in The Montgomery County Genealogical Journal, published by Ann Evans Alley. "Copied and Prepared by Priscilla Pickering Weathersby, Leader, and members of Senior Girl Scout Troop #1: Charlotte Wethersby, Barbara Robinette, Gina Ledbetter, and Gwen Powers. Work was begun the middle of October 1970 and completed the last of March, 1971." The census was published in the Journal in quarterly installments, the first in Volume II, Number 3, March, 1973,

and the last in Volume VI, #4, June, 1976.

A list of "Soldiers Buried in Riverside (This should be Riverview) Cemetery" was published in The Montgomery County Genealogical Journal, Volume VII, Number 2, December, 1977, page 59 (List 1 below). The source of the list is not stated, but it may be the roster of Forbes Bivouac, since it immediately follows the last installment of the roster. On the next page is: "There is a second list in the notebook which reads ""Confederate dead. Copied from a clipping which is pasted in the sheepskin binding record – a partial list of those who sleep in Riverside.""

"Of the 32 names on this second list all but 12 appear on the first list."

(List 1a below).

Following the last installment of the 1970-71 census is a list of Confederate soldiers buried in Riverview, and a statement that the census takers were able to find all but six of the graves listed. Graves not duplicated on List 1 or 1a are identified as List 2.

Below is an integration of the three lists, supplemented with information about Rank, Company and Regiment, when available, from Tennesseeans in the Civil War, birth and death dates from the tombstones and Forbes Bivouac records, and comments from other sources. For those graves that appear on the 1970-71 census, the cemetery section number is provided. If the soldier's name appears in the Forbes Bivouac records, his member number is provided.
