Obituary
In the wisdom of Him, who holds our destinies in the
hollow of His hand, it has seemed wise to call to his eternal reward,
our Brother, a loving husband and father, to whose mandates we humbly
bow, believing and trusting all to Him who doeth all things well.
B. F. Norfleet was born near Clarksville, Tenn., May
29, 1832, 84 years ago, and passed to his reward Jan. 21, after a long
and well spent life, eventful through a range of activities
encompassing the vicissitudes of war and the calmer times of peace:
"Uncle Ben," as he was familiarly known during the
later period of his life, was united in marriage to Josephine Hamlet
Oct. 10, 1855, and through the kindly providence of a loving Heavenly
Father, this happy union has bound their lives together until now, when
the shadow cast by the evening of their long life has separated them
for a time.
To them were born eleven children, four daughters
and seven sons, nine of whom are left to share their grief with their
mother and his devoted.
Early in the Civil War Uncle Ben, loyal to his
convictions and to his native state, enlisted as a private soldier in
the Confederate Army, soon after which he was taken prisoner at the of
Fort Donaldson and was held a prisoner of war at Camp Douglas until
released and honorably discharged from the Confederate Army.'After the
close of the war he, with
his small family, came to Illinois, where their large family was
reared, and where they have lived until the present time:
Twenty-one years ago (Nov. 14, 1895), he became a
member of the Pleasant View Free-Will Baptist church, where he has been
a faithful attendant and a loyal worker through the ensuing years,
cherised and loved by all.
In addition to his devoted wife there remain to
mourn his departure a brother, George Norfleet, and a sister, Mrs.
Jennie Stamper, both of Indian Mound, Tenn. The children left behind
are:

Besides his wife and children there are 43 grandchildren and 19 great-
grandchildren and many, other relatives and scores of friends who will
mourn his departure and teach their children to cherish his memory,
which as a husband, father and friend will remain a loving benediction
to bless their lives and bid them strive to join him in the New
Jerusalem, that city not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
