1. Best known as ‘1Sgt. Carter” in the popular TV series, GOMER PYLE, U.S.M.C., Frank Spencer Sutton Jr. was born and lived his childhood in C’ville where his parents were employed with the “Chronicle”.

2. He lived with his g’mother Spencer at 412 S. Second St.

3. In the summertime, he and the neighborhood children would move from porch to porch (people were porch sitters then) after supper to sing and act out imaginative stories.

4. When his parents landed jobs at the "Banner”, they moved to east N’ville where Frank finished high school.

5. He then went off to the army, later using his GI. bill to study at Columbia U., NY where he finished cum laude.

5. His private funeral was conducted at the gravesite on 28 June, 1974. Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) sang “How Great Thou Art” so bombasticaly the hill behind Section 12 echoed it back. (Story told by the late Ellis Hicks, caretaker).
