WILLIAM MATHIS

 


William MATHIS and his wife Sally ALLEN came to Montgomery County about 1806.  Here they bought a farm and raised their three sons and two daughters.  Upon William's death in 1826, he divided the property amount his five children and his wife.  These children were:  John W., Wilson J., James, Sally and Martha.
 
Census information reveals that John W. MATHIS (1806-) was a farmer in the Carbondale area of Montgomery.  On Feb 10 1857 he married Harriet BAIRD (1838-) in Dickson County, Tennessee.    John was a farmer.  He and Harriet had five children: Warner (1858-), Boyde (1860-), Minnie (1861-), Morgan (1863-), Hattie  (1866-), and Cyrus (1869-).

Wilson J. MATHIS (1808-1893) moved to Dickson County where he married and raised his family.  In Dickson he was a merchant and farmer.  He also served as sheriff and State Representative from Dickson County. W. J. married twice.  First to Louisa Blackwell ROBERTS(1815-1842) on 12 DEC 1833 in Dickson County.  Children of Wilson J. MATHIS and Louisa Blackwell ROBERTS were:  Elizabeth Frances (1835-1941), William James, Sarah Ann (1839-1840), Mary Ann and Martha (1814-).
 
His second wife Sarah Frances Elizabeth ROBERTS (1826-1911)was the sister of his first wife Louisa.  W. J. and Sarah were married on 30 OCT 1842.  They had eleven children: Augustin Jones (1847-1925), Wellella Frances (1848-1929), John Joseph (1851-1938), Thomas Henry (1853-1938), Gabriel Louis (1855-1931), Benjamin Willis (1858-1936), Montgomery (1860-1864),  Richard Dickson(1860-1939), Lee  Porter (1862-1946),  James Edgar (1866-) and Tobe Edward (1866-1938).  Many of these Mathis's are buried in Roberts Cemetery, Charlotte, Tennessee.
 
James MATHIS (1810-) married Martha EDMONDSON.  They appeared in the 1860 Montgomery County census with five children:  Sarah (1841-), Robert (1844-)., Samuel (1847-),  John (1851-) and Mary (1857-).
 
Sarah (Sally) MATHIS (1812-1895) married William Derby ORGAIN (1800-1840) Children of Sarah and William Derby ORGAIN were: Lucy Ann (1830), Elizabeth (1832-1923), Benjamin J. (1834-), William Mathis,  John W. (1840-).  Sally and William Derby Orgain are buried in the Orgain Family Cemetery, Montgomery County, Tennessee..
