Smith Henry Byrd

Smith Henry Byrd, 63, Route 2, Indian Mound, died Sunday afternoon at his residence.  The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Anglin Memorial Chapel in Dover with Edwin Hayes officiating.  Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Indian Mound.  Visitation will be held until the time of the service at the funeral home.  He was born in Stewart County on Sep. 27, 1921, the son of Thomas H. Byrd and Flossie E. Smith.  Byrd was retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service and from 10 years at Zale Jewelers in Two Rivers Mall.  He was a member of Indian Mound Church of Christ.  Survivors include his wife, Nancy Legate Byrd; a son, Richard Byrd, Indian Mound; a daughter, Cheryl Zach, Los Angeles, CA; six brothers, Jimmy and Bobby Byrd of Dover; and Kelley, Fred and William Byrd, all of Indian Mound, and Bill Byrd, Oak Ridge; a sister, Lillian Rogers, Toledo, OH; and four grandchildren.  Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

(Note:  On his mother’s side, Smith was a gg grandson of Bazel and Martha Hood Smith.)
