Fred J. Roper, 90, Norfolk, VA, formerly of Hopkinsville, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at a Norfolk hospital of natural causes.  Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Norfolk, with the Rev. Phyllis R. Earley officiating.  Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk.  Visitation will be from 7:30 until 8:30 tonight.  Masonic rites will follow the service Tuesday.  A native of Hopkinsville, he was the son of the late Edgar Newton and Annie Lacy Roper.  He was a retired general contractor and had worked in the overhaul and repair at the Norfolk Naval Station during World War II.  He was a Mason and a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church.  A daughter, Margaret “Ticky” Roper Garrett, preceded him in death.  Survivors include his wife, Katherine Harris Roper; a sister, Ellen Roper Perstein, Hendersonville, NC; and two grandchildren.  Memorials may be made to the Virginia Beach Symphony Orchestra, Post Office Box 2544, Virginia Beach, VA, 23450.

(Note:  Fred J. Roper’s grandparents, Elizabeth Melissa Atkins and Marcus Lindsey Roper were first cousins, so he was a great great grandson of Rev. War soldier Lewis Atkins through Lewis’ daughter Rachel Atkins who married Charles Roper and George B. Atkins who married Sarah Matheny.)
