E. J. Roper, 72, Contractor, Dies

Edwin Jasper Roper, 72, contractor and builder, died of a heart attack at his home on the Olivet Church road.  He had been in declining health for the past two years.  Mr. Roper was born in Waverly, Tenn., and was reared and had spent most of his life in Lafayette near Hopkinsville in Christian County.  He came to McCracken County to reside about 16 years ago.  He was a member of Palestine Methodist Church.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Effie S. Roper; two sons, James T. Roper, Paducah; and E. J. Roper, Jr., petty officer 2/c, U.S. Navy; six daughters, Mrs. H. Wallace Tanner; Mrs. E. B. Carroll; Mrs. E. A. Miller; Mrs. Perkins Quarles; and Mrs. Curtis King, all of Paducah; and Mrs. R. W. Graves, Bardwell; 20 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Lindsey funeral home.  The Rev. H. B. Clayton and the Rev. John W. Kloss will officiate.  The pallbearers will be G. Tandy Smith, Davis Moody, W. P. Price, Roscoe Reed, Dexter Howell and Berry Scott.  Interment will be in Mount Kenton cemetery.  Friends may call at the Lindsey funeral home.

(Note:  Edwin Jasper Roper was the twin of Edgar Newton Roper who died  May 12, 1943.  They were the sons of Marcus Lindsey Roper and Elizabeth Melissa Atkins Roper.  On their paternal side, they were grandsons of Rachel Atkins and Charles Roper.  On their maternal side, they were grandsons of George B. Atkins and Sarah Matheny.  They were great grandsons of Rev. War soldier Lewis Atkins and his wife Rebecca on both sides of their family, because their parents were first cousins.)
