FAMILY HISTORIES OF
PERSONS BURIED AT
GREENWOOD CEMETERY
CLARKSVILLE, TENNESSEE
LUCY UNDERWOOD WESTERN MERIWETHER
1. ‘‘Amazing Lucy” met her future husband, Hunter McCan Meriwether when she was a student at Ward’s Seminary in Nashville and he was studying law at Vanderbilt’s Law School.
2. Hunter died early leaving Lucy a fortune which she used to buy properties -35 in all. She bought and she swapped always leaving the property in better shape than she found it.
3. A joint property she and Hunter owned was “Mericourt” which they left to University of TN for an agricultural experimental station. In 1944 the state sold the property to the city of C’ville. It is now home to both a school and a city park.
Lucy and Hunter’s son——WILD WILL——buried here also, was famous for his
harried meanderings over the county in his fast coupe called “Whiskey Dick”.
