Lewis Whitfield was born in Montgomery County, Tennessee, about 1812; moved to Texas in 1853; resided there until 1871, when he died in New Orleans, while on a business trip to that city.  He was a successful farmer and merchant, and for many years a member of the Baptist church. Mrs. Sarah C. (Williams) Whitfield was also a native of Montgomery County, Tennessee, was born about 1816 and died in 1873, the mother of five children.
