1. John Conroy (Sr.) came to C’ville in 1859. Born in County Cork, Ireland, he had come to Nashville as civil engineer building bridges.

2. After the war, he was employed to re-construct the railroad bridge over the Cumberland. (When C’ville knew the Yanks were on their way here after the fall of Donaldson, the decision was made to burn the railroad bridge).

3. Immediately, John Conroy sent back to Ireland for his neighbor, young DANIEL HANLEY, noted for his artistry in stonemasonry.

4. The lovely stone you see today in the railroad bridge is work of that Dan Hanley, great grandfather of our own artist, Dan Harley.

5. In the 1870's Conroy and Hanley were hired to build the Trinity Episcopal (the one that withstood Tornado ‘99, except for the steeple).

6. John’s 1st wife, Julia Henneberry lies here as well as his 2nd, Hannah Murray. (Dan Hanley, et al lies behind the Conroy monument.)

6. Julia Henneberry’s bro was archbishop of Cincinnati; her 2 sisters were “Sisters”.  Hannah Murray, the 2nd wife, started the Catholic school here.
