1. The first Joseph Boillin came in 1845 to N. Orleans from near Paris, France. He was a tailor.

2. In 1850 yellow fever was raging so they went up the Mississippi intending to get as far as Nashville but heard aboard ship that yellow fever was epidemic there too. So they stopped in C’ville, which at that time had no tailor.

3. The second Joseph- Joseph Amadeus- went into the wholesale grocery business with John Hurst (father-in-1aw to Gov Austin Peay). This business became Hurst-Boillin, eventually Boillin-Harrison, down on the Square.

4. Joseph Amedeus built the S. Second Street home which was sold to Professor Joseph Ruggles Wilson, SR when he came to town.

5. The third Joseph Boillin was a mild mannered, shrewd businessman. But when he was riled, he was fond of saying, “I’m not just mad, I’m boilin’!
