HUGH MATTHEW DUNLOP

Section 1

1. Remember Hugh Dunlop, the gallant gent who came to the rescue of Anna Sears at the ferry? This same Hugh, born in Scotland in 1811 came first to Virginia as.a lad with his bros who wished to make their fortune in tobacco... .then Hugh,  with brotherJohn, came to C’ville. Bro. John moved on to N. Orleans but Hugh stayed here making a fortune in tobacco. Also he was a hugh land owner, One of his many farms was out on Dunlop Lane (now the James Bell farm) which runs by Gov, Sq. Mall.

2.  Hugh had 2 wives...the first, Rebecca Talley lies here commemorated by the tall marble statue. Surely his second, Martin (Mattie) Williams who died in 1902, lies here also, although unmarked. Hugh fell in love with Joseph Williams first dau, Mattie and married her IMMEDIATELY after the Civil War. She was 23.. .he was 53... 30 yrs. difference. They had 3 children: Joseph who built Ayrshire; Hugh Matthew, Jr. (called Matt) and Sarah (called Saidee) who married Frank Snadon.
