I. Miss Grace Pratt Stacker, who married Clay Stacker in 1872 in Lexington, VA, was daughter of Presbyterian minister, Dr. John Pratt. (Remember Clay Stacker is the figure atop the Confederate Monument.

2. When Clay was again a student at VMI after the-war, although an Episcopalean, he attended regularly Dr. Pratt’s church.

3.  The Episcopal minister noticed that MOST of the cadets as well as the students of Washington (and Lee) were attending Dr. Pratt’s church. He mentioned to Gen Lee (then president of Washington College.. .after Lee’s death it was called Washington & Lee) that. it MUST be Dr. Pratt’s eloquence which drew so many to his church. Gen Lee, well aware of Dr. Pratt’s beautiful daughter, Grace, tho’t a minute and said, “I rather think rather than Dr. Pratt’s eloquence, it’s Dr. Pratt’s Grace”...(excerpted from Douglas Southall Freeman’s biography of Lee, p. 283, Vol IV).

4. Grace lived here all her married life, dying at age 80.
