1.   Christian Kropp from Bremen, Germany, came to C'ville ar age 18 to seek his fortune (Remember, we were the #1 tobacco export site in the world).
2.   The interesting thing about Mr. Kropp is that, during C’ville’s occupation during the war, his home was used by Genera1 Grant as headquarters for his officers. This house was across from Trinity Episcopal on Franklin where old Good Wilson Drugs was situated.  Now architect Lane Lyle and partners own the site. For many years- until the 1960’s, the back of the house was still visible. BUT THIS HOUSE, during the war, really belonged to SEN. JAMES EDMUND BAILEY. Bailey, at the outbreak of hostilities, served on the state military bureau, whose job it was to equip the state troops. He then helped raise the 49th TN Infantry in which he served as COL. of his regimett. Captured at Ft Donelson, he was prisoner of war by the time Grant commandeered his house.
