MONTGOMERY COUNTY WILLS


Will of Bryan Whitfield
 
In the name of God, Amen.  I, Bryan Whitfield, of the County of Montgomery & State of Tennessee, being well of body and sound of mind, but having in remembrance the uncertainty of human life, do make & ordain this my last will & testament revoking all others viz
 
I give unto my son William B. Whitfield a Negro boy Ennis, and all my lands on the north side of Spring Creek except the bluff immediately on the bank, which I reserve for the use of the mill, and one bed and furniture.
 
I give and bequeath unto my son James B. Whitfield two Negroes, Simon & Emily, a horse saddle & bridle, one bed and furniture & fifty dollars to finish his education.
 
I give and bequeath unto my son Duncan Whitfield two Negroes, Harry & Sarah & her increase, two hundred dollars to educate him out of the personal estate, a horse saddle & bridle & a bed & furniture.
 
I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Jane Minor three Negroes, Cloe & Jim & Bett.
 
I give and bequeath unto my daughter Catherine Whitfield three Negroes, Dinah, Hannah & Pascal, a horse saddle & bridle a bed & furniture and a note on William Killebrew for forty two dollars to educate her.
 
I give and bequeath unto my daughter Margaret Ann Whitfield three Negroes, Jack (illegible) & Buck, a horse saddle & bridle bed & furniture & two hundred dollars from my personal estate to educate her.
 
I further will & bequeath all my land on the south side of Spring Creek together with the bluff on the North side of the creek to my three sons James, Bryan and Duncan to be equally divided between them.
 
It is further my wish that if either of my sons William B. Whitfield, James B. Whitfield, Bryan Whitfield or Duncan Whitfield should die without issue that the survivor or survivors shall inherit the land of them so dying without issue, and further if either of my daughters Mary Jane Minor, Catherine Whitfield or Margaret Ann Whitfield shall die without issue, that the property conveyed to her by this will & its increase shall be divided among the survivor or survivors of my daughters above mentioned viz Mary Jane Minor, Catherine Whitfield and Margaret Ann Whitfield. 
 
I hereby ratify and confirm all that I have heretofore given to my daughter Rachel Herring, and wish that after all my just debts have been paid that the balance of the money equally divided among my children William, James, Bryan, Duncan, Rachel, Mary Jane, Catherine, and Margaret Ann.  Given under my hand and seal this eighth day of April 1825.
