Smith, Charles Gholson  (1834 - 1890)

HOUSE, 40th General Assembly, 1877-79; representing Montgomery County; Democrat. Born in Haywood County Jan 7, 1834; son of William and Nancy (Bradbury) Smith. Attended “common schools” of Montgomery County; studied law in Clarksville, Montgomery County, and admitted to bar, 1854. Married in Sep 1859 to Mattie Johnson, daughter of Willie Blount and Catherine (Dortch) Johnson, of Montgomery County; children - Charles G., Jr., Willie J., Laura, and Earl. Practiced law at Clarksville; agent for insurance company, 1858; an incorporator of Clarksville Building Association, 1856; an incorporator of Greenwood Cemetery Co., 1869; president Crabtree Coal Mining Co., secretary and treasurer Memphis, Clarksville, and Louisville Railroad. City recorder for Clarksville, 1858-59; mayor, 1859 to occupation by Federal troops, 1862; elected chancellor of 7th Division of Chancery Court, 1869; reelected to same position after adoption of Constitution of 1870; resigned 1875. Member Methodist Episcopal Church. Knights of Pythias. Died at Clarksville Apr 14, 1890; buried in Greenwood Cemetery. Son-in-law of Willie Blount Johnson, sometime member TN General Assembly.
