Slaughter, Guilford H.  (1828 - 1897)

SENATE, 47th General Assembly, Extra Session, Aug 31, 1891 - Jan 1, 1893; representing Montgomery and Stewart Counties; elected to fill vacancy caused by resignation of A. V. Goodpasture; SENATE, 48th General Assembly, 1893-95; representing Montgomery and Robertson Counties; Independent. Born in North Carolina in 1828, son of Henry Slaughter. Attended “common country schools”. Married, date and place not indicated, to Amelia Bowman, native of Kentucky, and daughter of John Bowman of Virginia; children - Mollie, J.H.G., Sallie, and May. First lived in Nashville, Davidson County, as agent of Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway; teller in a Nashville bank; moved to Montgomery to engage in farming in St. Bethlehem community. Justice of the peace thirty years; postmaster at St. Bethlehem 1886; member state Board of Charities. Member Missionary Baptist Church. Died at Nashville Sep 10, 1897; buried on home place at St. Bethlehem.
