McGinty, Ewing Pike  (1817 – 1855)

HOUSE, 27TH General Assembly, 1847-49: representing Montgomery County; Whig. Born at Palmyra, Montgomery County, Sep 8, 1817; son of William A. and Eliza (Hyre) McGinty. Described as “self-taught”; apprenticed to publisher of Clarksville Chronicle c. 1828. Married Nov 23, 1848, to Mary McGavock, daughter of John and Cynthia (Kent) McGavock; two daughters – Mary Elizabeth and Johnnie Ewing. Became owner and editor Clarksville Chronicle 1836; acquired management of Clarksville Rough and Ready, a Whig campaign paper, Nov 29, 1847; following year purchased press and equipment of Rough and Ready and began publishing Tri-Weekly Chronicle, 1848, changing it to Weekly Chronicle; sold later in June, 1849 to Robert Warner Thomas; became associate editor and joint proprietor of Nashville True Whig, Apr 7, 1849. Member Methodist Episcopal Church. Died at Nashville, Davidson County, Sep 21, 1855; buried first in McGavock family graveyard; later removed to Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.
