Woman Died April First
April 1, 1937
Mrs. Mary E. Elliff
Mrs. Mary E. Elliff, 88, died at her home six miles east of
Tulia last Thursday, April 1, following an illness of several
weeks duration.
Funeral services were conducted from the Baptist Church in
Tulia by her pastor, Rev. A. C. Huff, assisted by Rev. J.A.
Lindley, last Saturday afternoon at 3:00.
Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery beside the grave of
her husband who preceded her in death.
She was a daughter of David and Eliza Horn and was born in
McNairy Co., TN. She was converted and joined the Baptist
church at the age of 19. She was married to Ananias Oliver
Elliff, November 19, 1865.
To this union were born 14 children, nine of whom survive and
all except one were present at the funeral. The nine surviving
children are Mrs. Nannie Elkins, J.D. and D.H. Elliff, Mrs.
Belle Casebeer, Lela and Ethel Elliff, all of Tulia, Mrs. Mary
Rodden, Newport, Texas; Mrs. Susie Straton, Clovis, New
Mexico, and John Elliff, San Benito, Texas. She is also
survived by one sister, Mrs. Jane Hockaday, Selmer, Tennessee,
34 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren and 1 great
grandchild.
Charlie Rodden, a grandson has been making his home with her
for almost 3 years.
Mrs. Elliff was a wonderful mother, always kind and patient,
even in her suffering, and was a friend to all.
