SIMPSON'S CHAPEL
aka
COBBY'S HUT
or
HELL NECK
This school and chapel was founded by George Corbin
(Cobby) Simpson, who came to
McMinn in 1867 on the waters of the Chestuee Creek south of the
Crabtree Settlement.
More correctly off State Highway163 onto CR 967, called Trails End..
The someplace and
family cemetery is now owned by Bruce Jordan.
The school-chapel was quite large to be called a hut from a newsprint
picture I have. In
those days everyone had a nickname for everyone and about everything.
The large boards
were vertical as in barns. It had oak shingle roofing. The
Simpson's tended to have extremely
large families back then and the need arose for a school.
The school took in students from
Black Jack/Crabtree School and some from the Jones Chapel
and Dentville area.
In 1907 this school was in the McMinn Co School Book of 1907-1911,
but not there after.
The teacher was J.F. Gentry @ $35.00/mo. Some other teachers
remembered by a former
granddaughter and student, Juna Simpson Smith, are: Stirl Lemons,
Nan Burris, Bynum Melton,
Mrs. Queener, Jim Gentry, Lillian Bacon, Marty Melton, Alice Davis,
Frank Rowland
Eben McBrien, Arthur McGahay, and Horace Dodson.
Cobby's Hut merged with the new consolidated school, Claxton, in
1921. The lumber from
this school was used to make a shed for the school wagon for this
area.
